Media Make-up students create the screams at major York Halloween attraction
Students from York College have been helping to create Halloween scares at one of the region’s spookiest visitor attractions.
The annual Hallowscream event at York Maze requires an army of zombies, creepy clowns and mutants to keep visitors thrilled. This year has seen a number of our BA (Hons) Media Make-up students honing their skills through actual workplace experience at the attraction.
Media Make-Up tutor, Chloe Fitzgerald, who is also helping to transform the actors at this year’s event, said: “This is a great opportunity for our students to gain valuable on-the-job experience.
“It can take up to half-an-hour to transform each actor but we aim to get through three zombies an hour. Even for a me, as a tutor, this is a fantastic learning experience. We have two hours to get the whole cast turned around each day, so it’s definitely about working to a tight time-frame.”
The Hallowscream event has become a popular seasonal event and York Maze relies on dozens of actors to keep the scares coming across a number of themed attractions.
Chloe said that for her students, the most satisfying part of the job was seeing and hearing the reactions of visitors.
“We hear a lot of screams” she said. “It’s all about the visual impact, and it’s really great to help achieve that.”
