Michael and Harvey build success at major national bricklaying contest

Harvey Enwright came out winner after impressing judges in the Stretch Test category – a measure of speed and accuracy in which entrants compete over one hour to build a two-brick pillar, 10 course high - a total of 60 bricks.

Meanwhile fellow student, Michael Topham put in a skilful display to gain silver in the overall Bricklaying category, while Harvey clinched a ‘Highly Commended’.

The SkillBuild 2021 National Finals took place at the National Construction College in Norfolk. Competitions took place over the course of three days, from Tuesday 16 November to Thursday 18 November 2021.

“The lads have been an absolute credit to themselves and to York College,” said Brickwork Tutor, Jon Mellor. “It was a really close competition.

“Michael and Harvey were very happy they took part after being a bit usure they able to achieve the high standards demanded in the finals. They’re now both a lot more experienced and wiser for taking part and they were really glad we persuaded them to enter.”

Skillbuild is delivered by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), and is the largest multi-trade competition in the UK for construction trainees and apprentices.
