It All Adds Up: Student Commission on Racial Justice Animation shows Race Reality in England

An animation highlighting the reality of life for Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) young people in England will be launched across the country today, following the government’s controversial report on Race and Ethnic Disparities.

The animation was created by the Student Commission on Racial Justice and shows a day in the life of four BAME young people as they encounter racism from the police, employers, healthcare services and in education.

Recruited by Leaders Unlocked in partnership with York College and 9 other further education colleges across England, the Student Commissioners are bringing the voice of thousands of young people to the debate about race equality in England.

The Student Commission on Racial Justice is exploring racial disparities across four key areas of society (Education, Employment, Health and Policing and Justice), developing national recommendations for change that will be delivered to decision makers in a final report and showcase event on June 17th 2021.

Student, Yasmin said: “I have loved being able to see our animation develop into something really amazing. This project has only increased my want to change things in society and it has made me more driven to do so. Before the project I might have witnessed injustices and decided to look on but now I am determined to use my own knowledge to help people be free from racial injustices.”

Lee Probert, Chief Executive and Principal, comments: “York College is delighted to have had the opportunity to join this partnership. It’s critical that students have a voice in matters of such significance. Providing this forum will ensure that they are empowered and their voices are amplified, supporting us all to take meaningful steps to secure racial justice.”
