Apprenticeship funding and the Digital Apprenticeship Service

With the introduction of the Apprenticeship Levy by the Government in 2017, employers with a payroll of over £3 million are now required to contribute to the Apprenticeship Levy to fund their apprenticeships. If your business fits this category, then the business would be known as a Levy Payer.

Businesses not paying the Levy are known as Non Levy Payers and are eligible to receive a 95% contribution towards the cost of the apprenticeship, unless you have 49 or less staff and your apprentice is in the 16 to 18 age group. Then, the cost of the apprenticeship training is fully funded. Your business would still be responsible for paying the apprentice’s wage.

From April 2021, the recruitment of all new apprentices will be required to go through the Digital Apprenticeship Service (DAS) system to access the funding for them, regardless of whether you are a Levy Payer or Non-Levy Payer.

Levy Paying employers allocate and agree funds from their Apprenticeship Levy account to cover the cost of the apprenticeship training and Non-Levy Paying employers will need to reserve funding for their apprenticeship programme/s through their Government Digital Apprenticeship System (DAS).

The Apprenticeship Digital Account Service

Through your account you will be able to manage a range of services. This includes managing apprenticeship funding, advertising vacancies on 'Find an Apprenticeship', finding training providers that deliver your chosen apprenticeship programme and reserving funding for the provider to deliver the chosen apprenticeship.

What you will need to do

You will first need to create an account, then add a PAYE scheme on behalf of your organisation and lastly accept the employer agreement with the ESFA (Education and Skills Funding Agency).

Information you will need

Before you begin to set your account up, you will need to have a couple of pieces of information to hand:

  • An email address you have access to
  • The Government Gateway login for your organisation if your organisation has a payroll of more than £3 million per annum or your business accounts office reference number and employer PAYE scheme reference number if your annual pay bill is less than £3 million
  • Authority to add PAYE schemes to the account
  • Authority to accept the employer agreement on behalf of your organisation

How it is paid

The new apprenticeship incentives are paid to you directly by the Government, in two instalments, around a year apart with the first one being approximately 4 months after your apprentice starts at College. These are paid by the government directly into the business account as per the details you enter when registering for the incentive claim on DAS.

How to claim

To claim the apprenticeship incentive, you need to apply for them through your digital account on DAS.
