Harlequin’s Coat, A Miscellany of Work by Emma Whiting

Harlequin’s Coat, A Miscellany of Work by Emma Whiting: 14th April – 20th May 2021

Emma Whiting’s practice tends to follow an interest, like walking along a path until it forks, with one thing leading to another. Abstract compositions allow her to play with colour, mark and mood, while figurative work indulges her pleasure in connections, suggestions, and a good story. Printmaking throws in the challenges of process, and science: its own special magic, more patches in the coat.

Emma has worked at York College for eight years. She was originally asked to teach six afternoons of drawing to the Access to HE Art and Design students and has stayed ever since. She read English at university as her first degree and then later completed an Art Foundation course followed by a PGCE in Art and Design. Since then Emma has been attempting to balance her practice with employment and family. Alongside teaching, Emma has also been in the post of Print Technician at the College for just over a year where she aims to share her love of printmaking and process with both the staff and students of the art department.

Emma will be exhibiting as part of York Open Studios this year (July 9/10/11, and 17/1), and you can view more of Emma’s work via her Instagram page.
