Every year, York College welcomes international students, aged 16-18, who require homestay accommodation during their time in York. As a homestay host, you can discover the rewarding experience of providing a home away from home, whilst earning a little extra cash.
All our students are studying for their A-Levels, arriving in September, and studying until July the following year. The home life of a student plays a large part in their overall experience so it's important that we have committed and welcoming homestay partners.
Homestay hosts are paid £26 per day, per student (fees are reviewed each year).
Homestay is where an international student lives with a host family and immerses themselves into the life and culture. Homestay is particularly popular as it allows students to adapt to life here quickly and improve their overall language skills irrespective of where they’re from.
But becoming a homestay host isn’t just about providing a place to stay – it’s about providing a home-away-from-home. As many of our students are living away from home for the first time in their lives, their hosts have an important role to play as people who take an interest in their welfare, engage in conversation, share meals, and offer support and advise.
And one of the biggest advantages that homestay offers is the lasting connections that are developed between host families and students. As a result, such a connection gives many students a real sense of stability whilst studying at York College.
- Private furnished bedroom with a desk and storage.
- Provide breakfast and evening meals (including lunch at the weekends).
- Actively make the student feel like part of the family.
- Live nearby or have good transport links to college.
- If hosting full-time, be available from the beginning of September when students arrive.
I was surprised at how easily the students slotted into my home with me and my two children. I have a busy life as a working mum but have felt no strain with the addition of hosting students. For anyone considering, I would absolutely recommend it. I wish I had considered it sooner! - C. Usher, Host
We are now in our 2nd year of hosting, and it’s been the best decision for our family. Having someone from a different culture for our daughter to learn from has been a great experience. It’s also given her that older sister that she wishes she could have! – M. Longman, Host

Do I need prior hosting experience?
Whilst having prior experience of hosting would be advantageous, it is not a requirement.
What if I have a holiday or other commitments planned?
We ask that you only accept bookings that you’re certain you will be able to honour, and that you inform us of any prior commitments. We just need to know the dates you’re away and we’ll work to find alternative accommodation during that time. However, if you wish to host full-time, you must be available from the beginning of September when the students arrive, otherwise we may not be able to guarantee placing a student with you.
Can I specify my preferences for the student I host?
Yes! We encourage hosts to complete our preference form so we can find the best possible match for your home and lifestyle.
What safety rules do I need to follow as a homestay host?
Safety rules that you need to adhere to include ensuring that your gas boiler and any appliances have a current certificate issued by a GAS-SAFE engineer; that you have smoke and carbon monoxide alarms fitted; established escape routes; and safeguarding awareness (training is provided by York College).
How long will the process take to become a host?
This can vary as it depends on your availability, staff availability, and the need for certifications. Typically, it can take between 1-3 months to complete the process.
What information will I receive about my student?
All hosts receive a custom student profile, which contains the student’s contact details and general background information (interests, hobbies etc). The profile will also advise if students have any allergies, medical disclaimers, or dietary requirements.
Do I need to register as a landlord?
As the student is staying with you for the purposes of advancing their education and the placement is arranged by us, it is not classed as a short-term let. As such, you should not need to register as a landlord. However, we are not able to provide you with legal advice, so if in doubt, please speak to the council.
What happens if I can no longer host?
We understand that sometimes hosts are unable to continue hosting due to unforeseen circumstances. However, we ask that hosts only cancel if it is unavoidable. Cancelling not only involves extensive administration, but also damages our credibility with agents. Worst of all, it can be very stressful and upsetting for the student. If you can no longer host, please notify us as soon as possible so we can work to find a solution.
