FAQS

Does York College run evening classes?

Yes, and they make up the bulk of what we offer adults. Most adult courses are taught on weekday evenings during term time, so evening study is the norm here rather than a small side offer.

Evening teaching is the default here rather than an afterthought. It is how the majority of our adult provision is built, so you are not squeezing into a daytime timetable that was designed for someone else.

That suits you if you are:

● Working full-time and retraining for a different career
● Topping up skills your current job is starting to demand
● Returning to study after a long gap and wanting to start small
● Picking up something for yourself rather than for work

Class times vary by course, so check the course page for the one you are interested in before you enrol.

Evening study is how most of our adult provision is delivered, so the choice is wider than a short list of subjects. Browse all adult courses to see what is running and when.

Qualifications and career skills:

● Professional and vocational qualifications across a range of subject areas
● Essential Skills in English, maths and digital skills
● Skills for Life, practical learning for adults

Hobbies, Leisure & DIY:

Our Hobbies, Leisure & DIY programme runs relaxed evening sessions, hands-on workshops and experience days. Recent subjects have included basic bricklaying, creative writing, Pilates, family history, songwriting, AutoCAD and car servicing.

How much does an evening course cost?

It varies by subject and level, and each course page carries its own fee. Our hobbies and leisure sessions start from £25. Some qualifications are free depending on your circumstances and what you have already studied.

Can you get help paying for an evening course?

Often, yes. Some courses are free if you are on a low income, receiving certain benefits, or do not yet hold that qualification at that level. Instalment plans, Advanced Learner Loans and employer sponsorship are all available where a fee applies.

Can you study in the evening while working full-time?

That is who evening classes are built for. Teaching runs outside standard working hours during term time, which is why most of our adult courses are timetabled that way.

How do you enrol on an evening course?

Through our adult enrolment page. You need to be 19 or over, and some courses ask for prior qualifications or relevant work experience, which the course page will tell you.

Who can study an adult course at York College?

Our adult courses are open to anyone aged 19 or over. Some carry entry requirements, usually prior qualifications or relevant work experience, and the course page will say so. Others ask for nothing more than an interest in the subject.

Can you start a course with no qualifications behind you?

Often, yes. Entry requirements vary by course and level, and plenty of our courses have none at all.
If you have been away from education for a long time, our Essential Skills courses in English, maths and digital skills are a sensible place to begin, and they build the foundation that higher-level study asks for.

Can you get to university without A Levels?

Yes. An Access to Higher Education Diploma is built to give you the skills and UCAS points you need for a degree or other higher-level qualification, and it is the standard route for adults who did not take A Levels at school.

Can you do an apprenticeship as an adult?

Yes. Apprenticeships sit alongside professional qualifications, short courses and higher-level study in what we off er adults, so you can train in a new fi eld while you keep earning rather than stepping away from work.

What support is there if you have a learning difficulty or disability?

Our Learning Support Team provides guidance, advice and support for additional needs, and our supporting you page explains what is on offer. Tell us before you enrol so that anything you need is in place for your fi rst session rather than halfway through.
