Introduction to British Sign Language (BSL)
This course is suitable for complete beginners of BSL, or those with some basic knowledge who are looking to improve their understanding.
Students will learn to understand and use a limited range of simple words and sentences, take part in simple, everyday conversations, give and follow simple directions or instructions and give and follow simple familiar statements or descriptions in BSL.

24th September 2026, Thursday evenings, 6.00pm-8.00pm.
7th January 2027, Thursday evenings, 6.00pm-8.00pm.
10 week course.

No entry requirements, this course is for beginners.
Course units
Course Content:
The course will cover a range of practical, everyday topics, including:
- Fingerspelling practice
- Facial expressions and non-manual features
- BSL grammar (topic-comment structure)
- Deaf culture and awareness
- Receptive skills (understanding others)
- Productive skills (signing clearly)
Assessment
Students will be informally assessed leading to the award of a College certificate.

Study methods
The course consists of work in the classroom (teaching and practice of BSL). An equivalent time spent on personal study at home may be beneficial to students.

Students have access to a fantastic range of College-wide facilities such as the Learning & Research Centre, study hubs, computer areas with accompanying multi-function printers and helpdesk advice.
Additional costs
All materials are provided for you to complete the course. However, some courses may require additional study from home, you may need access to a PC/laptop and suitable Wi-Fi to access teaching and learning. You will be made aware of any additional study time at the time of enrolment.
Course progression
The course would provide a useful progression on to L1 certificated BSL courses.
