Choosing your subjects is an exciting step towards your future. You'll study three subjects in total, plus an enrichment activity. If you wish to choose four subjects, for example 3 subjects plus Further Maths, please speak to us - we can advise on your options.
Choose subjects you enjoy and do well in
You'll achieve your best when you pick subjects that:
- You enjoy and find interesting
- Match your strengths and how you like to learn
- You've done well in at GCSE
Research
A Levels are quite different to GCSEs. It's important to find out as much as possible about what it will be like to study them. Use Open Events to speak to tutors about:
- What’s involved in each course
- The topics covered
- How you’ll be assessed
- The type of work you will be doing
Take care when choosing two or three subjects with a lot of coursework as this can be overwhelming. Please speak to us if you're not sure about your choice of subjects.
If you are considering certain careers you will need to take specific A Levels. For example, Medicine and Dentistry require Biology and Chemistry and most engineering courses require Maths and Physics.
Think about how subjects fit together
Some subjects naturally support each other:
- Science + Maths → logical thinking and problem-solving
- Humanities + Social Sciences → writing, anlaysis and discussion
- Arts + Creative → imagination and communication
- Languages + English → communication and cultural awareness
Mixing complentary subjects can strengthen university or career applications.
*Please note that we will aim to provide you with your choice of subjects, but we cannot always guarantee every combination.
Look at Vocational and T Level options too. There are many alternatives to A Levels that will give you the same, or better, opportunities. Choose the type of course that you can do best on.
