Italian - Beginners 1
This course is suitable for complete beginners or those with minimal exposure to Italian.
Students will acquire basic communication skills in Italian, for use in a variety of familiar useful situations such as when you’re on holiday or travelling for work.
Entry requirements
There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification and students can be complete beginners, however, we do also welcome people with a little experience of speaking Italian.
Course units
What you’ll learn:
- Basic greetings and polite expressions
- Introducing yourself: name, age, birthday, nationality, profession, and where you live
- Ordering food and drinks at a café
- The Italian alphabet, numbers, and telling the time
- Essential vocabulary for daily life
- Basic sentence building using simple present tense verbs
Grammar focus:
- Present tense of regular verbs
- Subject-verb and adjective-noun agreement
- Gender and number in nouns and adjectives
- Sentence structure for basic communication
By the end of this course, you'll be able to introduce yourself, engage in simple conversations, and feel confident using Italian in everyday situations.
Assessments
There are no formal assessments required as part of this beginner’s course, students will be awarded with a York College certificate upon completion.

Course progression
Students who successfully complete this course may progress to Beginners 2 if there is sufficient demand.

Study methods
This is a classroom-based course and will be taught with a focus on listening, understanding and speaking with an introduction to reading and writing.

Students have access to a fantastic range of College-wide facilities such as the Learning & Research Centre, study hubs, computer areas with accompanying multi-function printers and helpdesk advice.
Additional costs
All materials are provided for you to complete the course. However, some courses may require additional study from home, you may need access to a PC/laptop and suitable Wi-Fi to access teaching and learning. You will be made aware of any additional study time at the time of enrolment.
