Write a Film in 6 Weeks

There are no entry requirements for this course, but students should have passion for the subject.

Have you always fancied writing a film, but never quite got round to it? Well, now's your chance. It is not only possible to write a full-length screenplay in six short weeks, it is an easy, efficient enjoyable process. Honest!

We all spend approximately 13 years in front of a screen, so it's just a matter of unpacking the dormant knowledge that we already have. We already know what makes a good film, or a bad one, so let's drill down to reveal the mechanics of what works, and what doesn't. Then all we do is use those templates to create a movie of our own

In previous courses, we have looked at the craft of writing, but this time we will put that craft into action. Each week, award-winning screenwriter and former BAFTA Screenplay Judge, Rob Young, will give you a set you of simple tasks - for you to do at home. Week by week, block by block, these will build into a well-constructed screenplay. It might not win an Oscar, but it will be a pert, perky and professional product. 

Complete beginners, non-writers, shy people, film buffs and the vaguely curious are all welcome. Don't just watch films, write your own.

No formal assessments, but there will be tutor feedback throughout and a York College Certificate on completion. 

This course is free for those who live within the York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority, earn less than £35k a year, and have not have studied any previous tailored learning courses with us. Students can only do one tailored learning course regardless of the discipline.

As the course progresses, you'll gain the confidence to work comfortably in a group setting, mastering the techniques of creative writing. By the end, you'll be fully equipped to successfully write your own film!

16th April 2026-21st May 2026, Thursdays, 6.00pm-8.30pm.

Lessons will start with an introduction/familiarity to the subject and sessions will be highly interactive. The lesson will be wrapped up with a recap of what was taught and what the plan is the for next lesson.

You will be taught in a classroom with all materials provided.
