Skills for Technical Theatre introduces learners to the practical and creative foundations of working behind the scenes in live performance. Participants will gain hands-on experience with lighting, sound, stage building and stage management, while learning how technical teams collaborate to bring a production to life. 

Entry requirements

There are no entry requirements for this course, but students should have passion for the subject.

Course units

Skills for Technical Theatre introduces learners to the practical and creative foundations of working behind the scenes in live performance. Participants will gain hands-on experience with lighting, sound, stage building and stage management, while learning how technical teams collaborate to bring a production to life. 

The course builds confidence with industry terminology, equipment, and safe working practices, and encourages problem-solving, teamwork, and creativity in a real-world theatre environment. 

By the end of the course, learners will have developed core technical skills and an introductory understanding of backstage roles, preparing them for further study or entry-level work in technical theatre and live events.

Assessments

No formal assessments, but there will be tutor feedback throughout and a York College Certificate on completion. 

Course fees

This course is free for those who live within the York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority, earn less than £35k a year, and have not have studied any previous tailored learning courses with us. Students can only do one tailored learning course regardless of the discipline.

Full course cost: £150

Course progression

As the course progresses, you'll gain the confidence to work comfortably in a group setting, mastering the skills of working in technical theatre. 

You could then look into studying further courses with us.

Dates & course durations

14th April 2026-19th May 2026, Tuesdays, 6.00pm-8.30pm.

Study methods

Lessons will start with a gentle warm up and all sessions with be highly practical and interactive.

Facilities

You will be taught in our purpose-built, black box theatre, and any equipment required will be provided.
