There are no formal entry requirements for this course, although enthusiasm for working with wood is required.

Do you enjoy working with natural materials and creating something meaningful with your hands? Do you wish to gain skills that could boost your DIY potential or lead to further creative courses? Then this woodwork course is for you.
The course will introduce you to various wood materials and induct you on the basic tools and machinery for working timber, guiding you through the safe use.
We will go through basic methods of connecting materials with screws and dowels introducing you to drills and marking tools. Then utilising hand tools like planes, chisels and saws we will learn some jointing methods and carving techniques so you can gain an understanding of how tools cut and shape wood.

There is no formal assessment in this course.
Course fees
This course is free for those who live within the York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority, earn less than £35k a year, and have not have studied any previous tailored learning courses with us. Students can only do one tailored learning course regardless of the discipline.

Course progression
This course will give an introduction to working creatively with wood. This could be further built on with the following courses:
City & Guilds Level 1 Award in Construction Skills - Carpentry & Joinery
Access to HE Diploma (Art and Design)
BA (Hons) 3D Creative Practice
Plus our various York School of Art evening classes.
Dates & course durations
Monday 30th March; Tuesday 31st March; Wednesday 1st April.
10.00am-12.00pm then 1.00pm-3.30pm.
Study methods
Students will learn in a friendly and professional workshop environment with all appropriate health and safety provision.
Facilities
As well as specialist creative and art facilities, students have access to a fantastic range of College-wide facilities such as the Learning & Research Centre, study hubs, computer areas with accompanying multi-function printers and helpdesk advice.
