Art School: Jewellery Enamelling
This course is a great introduction to jewellery and is suitable for anyone who is wanting to learn the basic (yet essential) foundations in metalsmithing.
During this 10 week course, you will be encouraged to become familiar with the work of both ancient and contemporary makers. You will be shown a variety of metal smithing techniques and will be encouraged to experiment with different processes.
You will be shown how to expand your creativity, develop design, and professional advice is also available if required.
Your tutor will guide you through the processes and techniques and will be on hand to help you through the technical and aesthetic aspects of working with metal.

Entry requirements
There are no formal entry requirements, and anyone can enrol. The course is open to people with previous experience and qualifications in other art and media areas also.
Course units
This course is suitable for anyone with an interest in creating unique and colourful jewellery using the traditional craft of enamelling. Working through a series of practical projects, you will explore how enamel can be applied to metal to create decorative surfaces, textures and wearable pieces.
You will experiment with a range of enamelling techniques, beginning with the fundamentals of preparing metal and applying vitreous enamel before progressing to more creative methods such as layering colours, adding texture and incorporating decorative effects. Throughout the course, you will develop your own creative style while learning how to design and produce original jewellery pieces including pendants, earrings and brooches.
Whether you are looking to discover a new hobby, develop your jewellery-making skills or expand your creative practice, this course offers a supportive and enjoyable introduction to the art of jewellery enamelling. No previous experience is required, just enthusiasm and a willingness to experiment.
Assessments
There is no formal completion qualification and students will be able to work at their own pace. The course provides space, equipment and directed for students to produce sophisticated final pieces or just experimental outcomes.

Students will learn in a friendly and professional workshop environment with all appropriate health and safety provision.

As well as specialist creative and art facilities, students have access to a fantastic range of College-wide facilities such as the Learning & Research Centre, study hubs, computer areas with accompanying multi-function printers and helpdesk advice.
Additional costs
All materials are provided for you to complete the course. However, some courses may require additional study from home, you may need access to a PC/laptop and suitable Wi-Fi to access teaching and learning. You will be made aware of any additional study time at the time of enrolment.
You will be required to wear leather shoes.
Course progression
Completion of this course will enable students to progress on to various other Art & Design courses available at York College.
Career progression
You will be equipped with the skills and knowledge in jewellery making to help you progress and develop in a number of job opportunities to suit your personal needs and interests or pursue further simply for pleasure.
