This welcoming course helps parents and carers develop knowledge, confidence and practical skills to support young children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). Through engaging activities and tutor guidance, learners will gain a greater understanding of SEND, explore effective support strategies and learn about services and resources available to families. The course is suitable for beginners and provides an inclusive environment where participants can share experiences, develop new skills and explore opportunities for further learning and community involvement.
Wednesday 25th November 2026, 6.00pm-8.00pm.
There are no entry requirements for this course, just an enthusiasm for the topic and a willingness to learn.
Topics covered include:
- Understanding SEND in young children
- Child development and individual needs
- Supporting learning and play at home
- Building confidence and independence
- Working with schools and professionals
- Accessing support, services and resources
- Support networks and next steps for families
There will be no formal assessments but your tutor will work with you to make sure you learn and achieve the course objectives through in-class activities.
You may be eligible for this course to be free if your personal income is less than £35,000 and you live in the York North Yorkshire Combined Authority postcode area.
If your personal income is between £25,000 and £35,000 we would request a 25% contribution to the cost of the course. Learners may study more than one tailored learning course, provided each course has a distinct learning objective and aim.
If you are not eligible to get this course for free we would request 25% fee of the total course fee (£140.00), so the payment amount would be £35.00.
Students have access to a fantastic range of College-wide facilities such as the Learning & Research Centre, study hubs, computer areas with accompanying multi-function printers and helpdesk advice.
All materials are provided for you to complete the course. However, this course may require additional study from home, you will need access to a PC/laptop and suitable Wi-Fi to access teaching and learning.
The course is delivered through face-to-face classroom learning.
