This welcoming course helps parents and carers develop knowledge, confidence and practical strategies to support teenagers with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). Through engaging activities, discussion and tutor support, learners will explore common challenges, understand available support, and develop approaches to help young people thrive at home, in education and within their communities. The course is suitable for beginners and creates an inclusive environment where participants can share experiences, build confidence and identify further learning, support networks and progression opportunities.
Wednesday 13th January 2027, 6.00pm-8.00pm.
There are no entry requirements for this course, just an enthusiasm for the topic and a willingness to learn.
Topics covered include:
- Understanding SEND in the teenage years
- Common challenges and how to respond to them
- Supporting confidence and independence
- Improving communication at home
- Helping with education and learning
- Finding support and useful services
- Preparing for future opportunities and adulthood
There will be no formal assessments but your tutor will work with you to make sure you learn and achieve the course objectives through in-class activities.
You may be eligible for this course to be free if your personal income is less than £35,000 and you live in the York North Yorkshire Combined Authority postcode area.
If your personal income is between £25,000 and £35,000 we would request a 25% contribution to the cost of the course. Learners may study more than one tailored learning course, provided each course has a distinct learning objective and aim.
If you are not eligible to get this course for free we would request 25% fee of the total course fee (£140.00), so the payment amount would be £35.00.
Students have access to a fantastic range of College-wide facilities such as the Learning & Research Centre, study hubs, computer areas with accompanying multi-function printers and helpdesk advice.
All materials are provided for you to complete the course. However, this course may require additional study from home, you will need access to a PC/laptop and suitable Wi-Fi to access teaching and learning.
The course is delivered through face-to-face classroom learning.
