This welcoming course helps parents and carers develop the knowledge, confidence and practical skills needed to support their teenager's learning at home. Through engaging activities and tutor support, learners will explore effective study techniques, motivation strategies and ways to create positive homework routines. Participants will build confidence in supporting essential literacy, numeracy and study skills, while identifying next steps for learning and family engagement. The course is suitable for beginners and offers an inclusive environment where learners can share experiences, gain practical ideas and support their teenager's educational success.
Wednesday 17th February 2027, 6.00pm-8.00pm.
There are no entry requirements for this course, just an enthusiasm for the topic and a willingness to learn.
Topics covered include:
- Understanding how teenagers learn
- Creating effective homework routines
- Time management and organisation skills
- Supporting literacy, numeracy and study skills
- Building motivation and confidence
- Positive communication about learning
- Helping your teenager achieve their potential
There will be no formal assessments but your tutor will work with you to make sure you learn and achieve the course objectives through in-class activities.
You may be eligible for this course to be free if your personal income is less than £35,000 and you live in the York North Yorkshire Combined Authority postcode area.
If your personal income is between £25,000 and £35,000 we would request a 25% contribution to the cost of the course. Learners may study more than one tailored learning course, provided each course has a distinct learning objective and aim.
If you are not eligible to get this course for free we would request 25% fee of the total course fee (£140.00), so the payment amount would be £35.00.
Students have access to a fantastic range of College-wide facilities such as the Learning & Research Centre, study hubs, computer areas with accompanying multi-function printers and helpdesk advice.
All materials are provided for you to complete the course. However, this course may require additional study from home, you will need access to a PC/laptop and suitable Wi-Fi to access teaching and learning.
The course is delivered through face-to-face classroom learning.
