Students can be complete beginners but will find the course easier if they have a little knowledge of BSL already.

This course is suitable for complete beginners of BSL, or those with some basic knowledge who are looking to improve their understanding.

Students will learn to understand and use a limited range of simple words and sentences, take part in simple, everyday conversations, give and follow simple directions or instructions and give and follow simple familiar statements or descriptions in BSL.

Course units

Students will learn to understand and use a limited range of simple words and sentences, take part in simple, everyday conversations, give and follow simple directions or instructions and give and follow simple familiar statements or descriptions in BSL.

The course will cover basic greetings, talking about the weather, using numbers, asking for and understanding directions and talking about transport.

Assessment

Assessment methods used include practical teacher assessment of skills.

    Course progression

    Students who successfully complete term 1 of the BSL qualification may progress on to the Level 1 Award Unit 2.

    Study methods

    The course consists of work in the classroom (teaching and practice of BSL). An equivalent time spent on personal study at home may be beneficial to students.

    Facilities

    Students have access to a fantastic range of College-wide facilities such as the Learning & Research Centre, study hubs, computer areas with accompanying multi-function printers and helpdesk advice.

    Additional costs

    All materials are provided for you to complete the course. However, some courses may require additional study from home, you may need access to a PC/laptop and suitable Wi-Fi to access teaching and learning. You will be made aware of any additional study time at the time of enrolment.
