Art School: Surface Pattern
This course is suitable for all and a variety of abilities will be catered for, it covers a range of essential skills and techniques to provide a basic introduction to dressmaking as well as taking skills and interests to a higher-level.
Students will explore materials and techniques and learn basic essential techniques and skills. The course provides a basic understanding of safe dressmaking and sewing studio practice. The course can provide the support students need to follow up their own ideas and projects.
If students have a sewing machine at home, they should tell their tutor on the first evening; while sewing machines are available for use, it is very helpful for students to use their own domestic machine and will enable you to familiarise yourself with your own equipment.

Entry requirements
No experience is necessary to take part, although an interest in art, craft, and sewing is essential. This course is suitable for both beginners and intermediate level.
Course units
This course is suitable for anyone with an interest in creating original surface pattern designs for textiles, interiors, stationery and products. Working through a series of creative projects, you will explore how patterns are developed from initial ideas through to finished repeat designs.
You will experiment with a range of traditional and digital techniques, beginning with simple hand-made repeat patterns before progressing to industry-standard software such as Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.
Throughout the course, you will develop your own creative style while learning how patterns can be applied to a variety of products and materials.
Whether you are looking to explore a new hobby, refresh your creative practice or build a portfolio of work, this course offers a supportive and enjoyable introduction to the world of surface pattern design.
Assessments
There will be no test/examination associated with this course and students will be able to work at their own pace.

A variety of learning methods will be used including tutor presentation, varied demonstrations and one-to-one personalised guidance. Tuition will be delivered in our specialised workshops.

This course will take place in an art workshop.
