UAL Diploma in Music Performance & Production Level 2
This highly practical course introduces students to essential skills in studio recording and performance, providing a strong foundation for progression onto the Level 3 course. You will develop your abilities through hands-on projects and assignments based on realistic industry situations, gaining the key techniques and methods needed for further study and career development in the music industry.
A minimum of four GCSEs at grade 3 or above, GCSE English Language is desirable, however both English Language and maths GCSE can be achieved as part of this programme of study.
As well as the general entry requirements for Vocational Level 2 courses, you will be required to attend an audition to demonstrate your music skills and discuss your interest in the subject.
Students will be required to audition and demonstrate instrumental playing or singing skills and musical knowledge sufficient to undertake a Level 2 Music course.
Preparation for your Audition
For your audition you will need to bring your instrument with you except for Drums, Piano and Guitar Amplifiers. Playback facilities will be provided for backing tracks.
All Level 2 Vocational courses require you to perform:
- A song of your choice on your chosen instrument and
- A Beatles song of your choice on your chosen instrument
- Both songs must be performed to a backing track. This allows the tutor to see how you play in relation to other instruments, keep in time and respond to changes in music.
You will study a range of units which include:

- Listening Skills for Music Performance and Production
- Develop your song writing and composition abilities by creating original music.
- Contextual Research for Performance and Production
- Production Skills and Practice
- Music Performance and Production Project
- Build a website and track your learning digitally.
- Explore of a range of progression opportunities and pathways.
- Develop your performance skills through live showcases.
- Acquire organisational and communication skills such as calendar management, collaborating as part of a team, creative problem solving and meeting deadlines.
These skills are transferable across all subject areas, are highly valued in the job market and will boost the desirability of your CV and application to a Level 3 qualification.
You will typically be in College across 4 days per week which will also include any GCSE English and/or maths resits you may need to undertake. In-College delivery is supported by online resources and potentially trips and visits to support primary research within project work.
All assessments are carried out as coursework, both practical and written. There is a continuous assignment assessment process, involving practical and written work. Grades awarded for each assignment go towards a final grade for each unit. All units are assessed and an overall grade (Pass, Merit or Distinction) for the course will be awarded.
This is a full-time course. It is not possible to combine this course with other Vocational, T Level, Apprenticeship or A Level programmes.
This course is a stepping stone towards a career in Performance and Production. After this course, you could apply for the Level 3 in Music Performance & Production, another Level 3 course in the College or use your skills in employment.
