Bricklaying City & Guilds Diploma Level 1
This course offers a hands-on introduction to bricklaying, with 60% of your time spent in the workshop developing practical skills and 40% in the classroom learning essential theory. You will gain the fundamental knowledge and techniques needed for employment in the industry. To succeed, you must demonstrate strong commitment, enthusiasm, teamwork, and excellent attendance and punctuality.
Entry requirements
A minimum of 3 GCSE subjects at grade 2 or above including English or Maths and either English or Maths at grade 3.
What will I study?
You will complete a range of units, including:
- Principles of Building Construction, Information and Communication – Understanding key concepts in construction and how to interpret building information.
- Contribute to Setting Out and Building of Masonry Structures up to Damp Proof Course – Learning the basics of setting out and constructing walls up to DPC level.
- Carrying Out Block Laying Activities – Developing skills in laying concrete blocks accurately and efficiently.
- Carrying Out Bricklaying Activities – Mastering the techniques of laying bricks to industry standards.
- Carrying Out Cavity Walling Activities – Gaining knowledge and skills in constructing insulated cavity walls.
- Health, Safety and Welfare in Construction – Understanding the importance of safety regulations and best practices on-site.
Additional costs

Method of delivery
This programme will be delivered in our modern workshops and classrooms, focusing on developing your practical skills, knowledge and professional behaviours ready for assessment. All assessments will be carried out in accordance with awarding body guidelines. To ensure you are fully prepared, we will support you in building your skills, knowledge, and confidence, giving you the best opportunity to reach your full potential. Our curriculum is structured to align with industry needs, guiding you through each stage of your learning journey.
How will I be assessed?
Practical and theory work will be assessed in line with awarding body requirements. This will be a mixture of online externally set and marked examinations and practical synoptic assessments.
Good course combinations
This is a full-time course. It is not possible to combine this course with other Vocational, T Level, Apprenticeship or A Level programmes.
Your next steps
On completion of this course, you can progress on to the next level where appropriate or go on to find employment in order to transfer to an apprenticeship, then higher-level courses in construction.
