Sam Welch wins 2026 North Yorkshire Apprenticeship Award for Engineering and Manufacturing
Sam Welch has been named 2026 Engineering/Manufacturing Apprentice of the Year at the North Yorkshire Apprenticeship Awards.
The York College & University Centre Level 3 Engineering Maintenance Technician apprentice, who is employed by Siemens Healthineers, was presented with the prize by York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority Business Relationship Manager Mike Pennington (see main image) during the prestigious Presentation Night that was held at the DoubleTree By Hilton Harrogate Majestic Hotel & Spa.
It marked the perfect manner for Sam to celebrate the successful completion of four years studying at Sim Balk Lane, having first enrolled on our Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering back in 2022.
Sam, 20, won the award after demonstrating technical expertise and maturity that exceeds expectations, while supporting healthcare engineering systems and acting as a role model.
He attended the ceremony with York College Engineering Curriculum & Standards Manager Lisa Wheeler and other staff members.
Sam was joined, too, by four other shortlisted York College finalists in Harrogate – Melissa Barker (Professional Services Apprentice of the Year), Morgan Zareba-Wynne (Advanced Apprentice of the Year), Philip Crisp and Lennie McGrath (both Intermediate Apprentice of the Year).
York College were also shortlisted for the Training Provider/Programme of the Year award.
