Advanced Manufacturing Engineering BTEC Certificate: Year One
The BTEC Advanced Manufacturing Engineering qualification (Certificate) is an ideal course to give you experience, knowledge and skills across a broad range of engineering disciplines. This is an academic, applied engineering course which in Year One (Certificate) is equivalent to 1.5 A Levels and if you progress to Year Two (Extended Diploma) is equivalent to 3 A Levels.
The course provides a good balance between important underpinning engineering knowledge such as maths and science but also covers design, electronics, engineering materials, computer aided drafting and much more. You will develop a broad range of engineering knowledge and skills and understand this in an industrial context, covering manufacturing, mechanical and electronic/electrical engineering disciplines. This is not a practical workshop-based engineering course.
This is a popular course therefore early application is advisable.
Entry requirements
A minimum of 5 GCSE subjects at grade 4 or above including a grade 5 in Maths on the Higher Paper, and ideally 4 or above in English.
What will I study?
Year One is made up of nine units; three mandatory units and six further units to give a multiskilled experience as advised by local, regional employers. In Year Two you will study a further nine units.

Method of delivery
You will typically be in College three days per week, spending time in classrooms studying theory as well as in the specialist laboratories and CAD (Computer Aided Design) suites.
You will study nine units across the week in Year One with our specialist tutors, with each lesson being a 1.5 hour session for each unit.
For each unit you are taught the knowledge and skills progressively and then you apply this to complete assignments to demonstrate your understanding, most units have 3 to 4 assignments.
How will I be assessed?
All units are assignment based, with three to four assignments for each unit and these are spread across the year. For each unit you are taught the skills and knowledge and then apply this to complete assignments to demonstrate your understanding. Some assignments are report/essay based, some might be a practical task or experiment, some may be a presentation or teamwork activity, some are controlled assessments, so there are a range of assessment methods.
Every assignment contributes to your final grade. Achievement of the assignments throughout the year builds up your Pass, Merit and Distinction criteria. You will achieve a single grade of Pass, Merit or Distinction for the overall course.
Good course combinations
This is a full-time course and cannot be combined with other Vocational, T Level, Apprenticeship or A Level programmes. It is only possible to combine this course with a GCSE English resit.
Your next steps
With this course you can progress on to the BTEC Extended Diploma Advanced Manufacturing Engineering. Alternatively, you could also progress on to a Level 3 Apprenticeship, or employment in engineering. You could also transfer to another related sector such as electrical installation or motor vehicle, or another course all together.
