Level 3

A Stonemasonry Apprenticeship Level 3 is designed to develop advanced skills and knowledge in the craft of stonemasonry, preparing individuals for a professional career in the construction industry. This apprenticeship focuses on both the practical and theoretical aspects of working with natural stone, ensuring that apprentices are well-prepared for a variety of complex tasks.

Stonemasonry Apprentices at Level 3 are responsible for producing and installing intricate stone components, including detailed architectural features, restoration work, and bespoke stonework. Their duties involve interpreting detailed technical drawings and specifications, selecting and using appropriate tools and materials, and applying advanced techniques to shape and finish stone with precision.

Throughout the apprenticeship, individuals learn to work independently and as part of a team, managing projects from planning to completion.

Entry requirements

You must be employed in a relevant role for a minimum of 30 hours per week. As a minimum, you should have 4 GCSEs or equivalent at grade 4 or above, including English and Maths. You must also have achieved the Level 2 Stonemasonry Apprenticeship

What will I study?

On a Level 3 Stonemasonry Apprenticeship, you will study a range of advanced topics and develop skills necessary for a successful career in stonemasonry.

The course typically includes the following units:

  • Health, Safety, and Welfare in Construction: Understanding and applying health and safety regulations to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Principles of Organizing, Planning, and Pricing Construction Work: Learning how to plan and manage stonemasonry projects, including cost estimation and resource management.
  • Setting Out and Template Making for Complex Stonemasonry Components: Developing skills in creating templates and setting out complex stone structures.
  • Working Complex Stonemasonry Components: Gaining proficiency in carving, shaping, and finishing intricate stone components.
  • Fixing Complex Stonemasonry Components: Learning techniques for securely installing complex stone elements on-site.
  • Conservation and Restoration Techniques for Architectural Heritage: Understanding methods for preserving and restoring historical stonework.

Throughout the apprenticeship, you'll gain hands-on experience and build a portfolio of evidence showcasing your work and skills. The program culminates in an End-Point Assessment (EPA) involving practical tests and interviews.

Method of Delivery

Stonemason apprentices attend College on block release, which is 11 weeks, and work for their employer for the rest of the time. If required, Functional Skills are delivered as a separate block release.

How will I be assessed?

Continual assessment will take place throughout the duration of the apprenticeship. If required, the Functional Skills are assessed through on-line tests.

The End-Point Assessment (EPA) will comprise of:

  • Practical Skills Observation with questioning in College
  • 90-minute interview based on your portfolio of evidence

Additional course costs

There are no specific College programme related costs, however you will be advised of any additional costs during your application and enrolment process.
