Craft Carpentry & Joinery - Site Carpentry Apprenticeship Level 3
A Site Carpenter Apprenticeship Level 3 is designed to develop advanced skills and knowledge in carpentry, preparing individuals for a professional career in the construction industry. This apprenticeship focuses on both the practical and theoretical aspects of site carpentry, ensuring that apprentices are well-prepared for a variety of complex tasks.
Site Carpenter Apprentices at Level 3 are responsible for working with wood-based materials and associated products to create and install intricate building components. Their duties include shaping and cutting materials, installing finished materials such as complex or decorative components, and erecting irregular and complex roof structures. They work on construction sites, both in new builds and refurbishment projects, ensuring that all work is carried out safely and to the specified quality standards.
Throughout the apprenticeship, individuals learn to interpret detailed technical drawings and specifications, select and use advanced tools and materials, and apply safe working practices in compliance with health and safety regulations
Entry requirements
You must be employed in a relevant role for a minimum of 30 hours per week. You must have achieved Level 2 in Site Carpentry and have passed GCSE English and Maths at grade 4 or above or have achieved Functional Skills in these subjects at Level 2.
What will I study?
This apprenticeship will give you the knowledge skills and behaviours required to work as a Site Carpenter and will include the following:
- Install complex and non-standard doors and window frames, shaped door and hatch linings, partitions with openings and changes of direction and staircases with turns
- Install accessible service encasements, bespoke wall/ floor units and fitments, panelling and stair components e.g. balustrades, handrails and spindles to staircases with turns
- Erect inclined roofs with gables, roof verges and eaves, including finishings, joists and roof coverings, dormers and features
- Repair and or replace frames, mouldings, floor or flat roof joist coverings, door and window ironmongery, window components, structural joists and rafters, window components, guttering and downpipes
- Use and maintain marking tools, hand tools, power tools and associated equipment required for advanced work
- Carry out pre-use checks of all tools and equipment to be used for the project by self and colleagues, providing training and instruction where necessary
- Carry out quality checks of own and others work against specification and take remedial action, providing instructions to others as to the work required
- Take a lead when working in a team, especially when complex or non-standard work is involved
- Complete work in respect of fire doors in accordance with current legislation
You will also produce a portfolio of evidence demonstrating examples of your work throughout the apprenticeship.
Method of delivery
Site Carpentry apprentices attend College on block release (approximately one week per month) and work for their employer for the rest of the time.
How will I be assessed?
Continual assessment will take place throughout the duration of the apprenticeship. The End-Point Assessment (EPA) will comprise of:
• 12-hour practical test with questions, split over 2 days
• 90-minute interview based on the portfolio that you have completed during your apprenticeship

There are no specific College programme related costs, however you will be advised of any additional costs during your application and enrolment process.

Advanced Site Carpentry Apprenticeship Level 3.
Fire Door Installation Awareness.
Good course combinations
It is not possible to combine this course with other Vocational, T Level or A Level programmes.
Your next steps
The achievement of this apprenticeship will meet the requirement of the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) ‘Advanced Skilled Worker’, which is widely recognised as a ‘license to operate’ in a skilled construction trade. On completion you will progress to a wide range of employment opportunities such as supervisors in the workplace and then progress on to management level jobs.
Self-employment or starting a business may also be an option. Candidates may also progress on to higher-level qualifications such as an HNC.
