This apprenticeship will give you the knowledge skills and behaviours required to work as a Craft Bricklayer.

Entry requirements

You must be employed in a relevant role for a minimum of 30 hours per week and have completed the Level 2 Bricklayer Apprenticeship or equivalent. As a minimum you should have Level 2 Functional Skills maths and English or GCSE grades 4 or above for maths and English.

What will I study?

Units covered include the following:

Knowledge of health and safety regulations, standards, and the impact on construction trades. You will develop understanding of environmental management systems and standards, including surface water management, environmental signage and notices, types of pollution, control measures and disposal of hazardous waste.

Knowledge of building construction:

  • Fire stopping, masonry defects, concrete defects, structural stability, gas barriers, retaining walls.
  • Modern methods of construction: timber frame, steel frame, insulated concrete forms, modular and concrete frames, cross laminated timber frames.
  • The principles of heritage building, considerations, and techniques applicable to the bricklayer
  • Planning, prioritising, work scheduling, and time management techniques for self and others
  • Stock control and considerations, including availability, stock lead times, correct handling, stock value, faulty stock and returns process, stock rotation and quality control.

Skills development, covering a range of complex bricklaying techniques; including herringbone/basket weave panels, segmental/semi-circular (rough, axed and gauged) arches, concave/convex brickwork, battered brickwork, tumbling in, corbelling, fireplaces & flue construction.

Skills development to interpret key information from drawings, and specifications, to produce a work plan or instructions for others. This will include resource quantity calculations, costings, and wastage allowances.

Promoting collaborative behaviours and teamwork to enable others to achieve high-quality standards, whilst considering the wellbeing of yourself and others.

Method of delivery

Craft Bricklayer Apprentices attend College on block release which is for 2 weeks at a time (12 weeks over the academic year; to be decided) and work for their employer for the rest of the time. If required Functional Skills are delivered as a separate block release.

How will I be assessed?

Continual assessment will take place throughout the duration of the apprenticeship.

The End-Point Assessment (EPA) will comprise of a multiple choice, computer-based knowledge test, a 12-hour practical test with questions; split over 2 days and a professional discussion underpinned by your portfolio based on the evidence submitted.

There are no specific College programme related costs, however you will be advised of any additional costs during your application and enrolment process.

Good course combinations

It is not possible to combine this course with other Vocational, T Level or A Level programmes.

Your next steps

Following completion of this apprenticeship students may progress into full-time work in the industry, or continue with the next level of study.
