Craft Carpentry & Joinery - Architectural Joinery Apprenticeship Level 3
An Architectural Joiner Apprenticeship Level 3 is designed to develop advanced skills and knowledge in the craft of joinery, preparing individuals for a professional career in the construction industry. This apprenticeship focuses on both the practical and theoretical aspects of architectural joinery, ensuring that apprentices are well-prepared for a variety of complex tasks.
Architectural Joiners are responsible for creating and installing intricate building components, such as doors, windows, staircases, and bespoke furniture. Their duties involve interpreting detailed technical drawings and specifications, selecting and using appropriate tools and materials, and applying advanced techniques to shape and assemble wood-based products with precision.
Throughout the apprenticeship, individuals learn to work independently and as part of a team, managing projects from planning to completion.
Entry requirements
You must be employed in a relevant role for a minimum of 30 hours per week. You must have achieved Level 2 in Architectural Joinery and have passed GCSE English and Maths at grade 4 or above or have achieved Functional Skills in these subjects at Level 2.
What will I study?
This apprenticeship will give you the knowledge skills and behaviours required to work as an Architectural Joiner and will include the following:
- Set out complex work tasks for non-standard architectural joinery products, including complex door sets, doors, windows, units and fitments, staircases (straight and with turns) and products with single/double curvature features
- Mark out accurately from setting out details for the manufacture of complex and shaped (circular and circular on circular) doors, opening windows, units and fitments and staircases
- Manufacture complex and shaped (circular and circular on circular) architectural joinery products including doors, windows with opening lights, units and fitments, panelling/cladding, staircases (straight and with turns) and veneers
- Set up and use fixed machinery such as circular saws, planers, thicknessers, bandsaws, mortices, tenoners, spindle moulders, grinders (including tool sharpening) and sanders
- Use and maintain marking tools, hand tools, power tools and associated equipment required for advanced work
- Carry out pre-use checks of all tools and equipment to be used for the project by self and colleagues, providing training and instruction where necessary
- Carry out quality checks of own and others work against specification and take remedial action, providing instructions to others as to the work required
- Take a lead when working in a team, especially when complex or non-standard work is involved
- Complete work in respect of fire doors in accordance with current legislation
You will also produce a portfolio of evidence demonstrating examples of your work throughout the apprenticeship
Method of delivery
This apprenticeship is delivered on a day-release basis. One day per week at York College during college term time – and working with your employer the rest of the time.
How will I be assessed?
Continual assessment will take place throughout the duration of the apprenticeship. The End-Point Assessment (EPA) will comprise of:
• 12-hour practical test with questions, split over 2 days
• 90-minute interview based on the portfolio that you have completed during your apprenticeship

There are no specific College programme related costs, however you will be advised of any additional costs during your application and enrolment process.

Advanced Architectural Joinery apprenticeship Level 3. Fire Door Installation Awareness.
Good course combinations
It is not possible to combine this course with other Vocational, T Level or A Level programmes.
Your next steps
The achievement of this apprenticeship will meet the requirement of the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) ‘Advanced Skilled Worker’ standard, which is widely recognised as a ‘license to operate’ in a skilled construction trade. Candidates may also progress on to higher level qualifications such as HNC and work in roles such as supervisors in the workplace and then progress on to management level jobs. Self-employment or starting a business may also be an option.
