Furniture Making Operative Apprenticeship Level 2
This occupation is found in the furniture, furnishings and interiors manufacturing industry. Furniture making operatives manufacture furniture for domestic, office and commercial settings, making both mass-produced products and individually designed furniture. They also manufacture the various components needed to produce fitted kitchens, bathrooms or bedrooms. They measure, prepare and mark out materials and set up and operate machinery. Some will need to use computer numerically controlled (CNC) machinery and other technology involved in manufacturing furniture. They assemble, rectify, rework and repair furniture and understand finishing techniques. Employers vary in size from micro to large.
The broad purpose of the occupation is to manufacture, assemble, furniture and furniture components. They also pack and store finished furniture, and perform first line maintenance and contribute to continuous improvement activities.
Entry requirements
You must be employed in a relevant role for a minimum of 30 hours per week. As a minimum, you should have 3 GCSEs at grade 3 or above, including English and Maths. If you do not have grade 4 or above in English and Maths and you are aged 18 or under at the start of your apprenticeship, you will be required to work towards Level 2 Functional Skills in these subjects.
What will I study?
Furniture Manufacturers are skilled craftsmen/women who make pieces of furniture. They may work in a small, independent shop that produces custom furniture or in a factory that mass-produces pieces of furniture. They may manufacture furniture for domestic use, office settings, furniture for public areas e.g., hospitals and schools, and manufacture high-quality wood components. Apprentices will take the occupational route that is best suited to the business they work in.
Units include:
- Make components of furniture to specification within acceptable tolerances.
- Use appropriate equipment to cut materials within acceptable tolerances.
- Understand the principles of joints used in making hand-crafted furniture.
- Assemble components of furniture.
- Understand the sequence of assembly and why this is important.
- Measure and mark out materials to specification.
- Sand materials for preparation prior to assembly, post-assembly and de-nibbing.
- Understand grit sizes and the process of sanding
- You will also produce a portfolio of evidence demonstrating examples of your work throughout the apprenticeship.
Method of delivery
Apprentices will typically attend York College on a day release for the duration of the apprenticeship and work with their employer for the remainder of their contracted hours. During their time in College, apprentices will work towards developing their knowledge, skills and behaviours, and at work will consolidate their on-programme learning with the support of their employer. An assessor will visit the workplace every 8-10 weeks to discuss and monitor progress on the apprenticeship in conjunction with the employer.
How will I be assessed?
Continual assessment will take place throughout the duration of the apprenticeship.
The End-Point Assessment (EPA) will comprise of a 3 hour observation with questions and a 70 minute interview with at least 9 questions which is based on your portfolio of evidence.

It is not possible to combine this course with other Vocational, T Level or A Level programmes.
