VTCT Level 2 Complementary Therapies
The VTCT Level 2 Diploma in Complementary Therapies at York College is an introductory qualification designed for individuals interested in exploring holistic therapies.
This course provides foundational training in key areas such as basic massage therapy, aromatherapy using pre-blended oils, and reflexology techniques. Additionally, students gain insights into the principles and practices of complementary therapies, along with an understanding of clinic services and business awareness relevant to the field.
Delivered in York College's professional salon environment, the program combines practical hands-on experience with theoretical learning, preparing learners for further study or entry-level roles in the wellness and holistic health sector.
Entry requirements
Level 1 English and Maths is required, as students will need to verbally communicate with clients and complete written work booklets and tests.
Students will be required to wear a College black T shirt and black trousers. Shoes must flat and fully support the foot. Long hair must be tied up so that it is fully off the face and neck (ideally in a bun). Nails must be short and product free. Jewellery must not be worn for practical activities; piercings must be removed.
Course units
Learners will develop the following skills.
- Consultation techniques – to include understanding the needs of clients and when not to treat them.
- Basic massage techniques – to include classical massage movements and selecting a suitable massage medium for the client.
- Basic aromatherapy techniques – to include using pre-blended oils and adapting the treatment to suit the client’s specific needs.
- Basic reflexology techniques – to include basic treatment techniques such as thumb walking, finger walking, relaxation and breathing and adapting the treatment to meet the client’s specific needs.
Units studied include:
- Provide basic massage therapy techniques for complementary therapies.
- Provide basic aromatherapy techniques using pre-blended oils.
- Provide basic reflexology techniques.
- Introduction to clinic services and business awareness for complementary therapies.
- Introduction to principles and practice of complementary therapies.
- Knowledge of anatomy and physiology for complementary therapies.
- Introduction to healthy eating and well – being for the complementary therapy clients.
Assessments
The assessment for the VTCT Level 2 Diploma in Complementary Therapies at York College is designed to evaluate both practical skills and theoretical understanding.
Students are assessed through a combination of practical observations, where they must demonstrate competence in delivering treatments such as basic massage, reflexology, and aromatherapy using pre-blended oils. These treatments are performed in a realistic working environment on clients, ensuring students meet professional standards.
In addition to practical assessments, learners complete written assignments, case studies, and online tests to demonstrate their knowledge of anatomy and physiology, health and safety, and the principles of complementary therapies.
This comprehensive assessment approach ensures students are fully prepared for progression to higher-level study or entry-level roles in the holistic therapy industry.

Dates & course durations
September 2025 - June 2026
Students will attend College one evening per week (Tuesday 6.00pm-9.00pm) for the academic year (36 weeks).

Students participate in hands-on training within professional salon settings, where they practice techniques in massage, aromatherapy, and reflexology under the guidance of experienced tutors.

Learners also engage in group work, discussions, independent study, and use digital resources to reinforce their understanding.
This combination of methods helps students build confidence, develop professional skills, and prepare for assessment and future progression in the field.
Facilities
York College offers outstanding facilities designed to support and inspire students in the Hair, Beauty, and Media Make-up industries. Our Hair & Beauty department features two large, fully equipped hairdressing salons and four professional-standard beauty therapy salons, providing real-world environments for students to refine their skills. A welcoming commercial salon reception area enhances the professional experience, while three dedicated media make-up workshops offer creative spaces for students to bring their artistry to life using industry-standard tools and products.
Beyond the Hair & Beauty department, all students can enjoy the wider College’s outstanding facilities, including the modern Learning & Research Centre, quiet study hubs, well-equipped computer areas, multi-function printers, and expert support from the on-site helpdesk team - ensuring the perfect environment for both practical learning and academic success.
Additional costs
Students will need to purchase the salon Inspired T shirt – cost to be confirmed (approximately £15). They will need to wear their own plain, smart black trousers and flat black shoes that fully support the foot (not trainers, boots or sandals).
