Laser and Light Treatments for Hair Removal: This unit trains students in the use of laser and intense pulsed light (IPL) systems for effective hair reduction, emphasizing safety protocols and client care. 

Laser and Light Treatments for Skin Rejuvenation: Students learn techniques to improve skin texture and appearance using laser and light therapies, focusing on treatment planning and post-care.

Microdermabrasion Techniques: This unit covers the application of microdermabrasion for skin exfoliation and rejuvenation, including understanding skin types and conditions.

Dermatology and Microbiology: Students gain insight into skin structure, common disorders, and the role of microorganisms in skin health, which is crucial for advanced treatments.

The course will run over one day/evening for 35 weeks, 9.15am-9.00pm.

Study methods

Practical Training Sessions: Hands-on learning delivered in professional salons and workshops, where students practise techniques under the expert guidance and supervision.

Classroom-Based Theory: In-depth classroom sessions covering consultation techniques, anatomy and physiology, health and safety, and aftercare procedures.

Laboratory-Based Theory: Students learn related chemistry aspects in one of the College/University Centre labs

Client Case Studies: Real client consultations and treatment planning to build confidence and competence in providing tailored services.

Independent Study: Assignments and research tasks completed outside of class to reinforce theoretical understanding. Students will have access to the dedicated University spaces at college.

Facilities

York College and University Centre offers outstanding facilities designed to support and inspire students in the Hair, Beauty, and Media Make-up industries. Our Hair & Beauty department features two large, fully equipped hairdressing salons and four professional-standard beauty therapy salons, providing real-world environments for students to refine their skills. A welcoming commercial salon reception area enhances the professional experience, while three dedicated media make-up workshops offer creative spaces for students to bring their artistry to life using industry-standard tools and products.

Beyond the Hair & Beauty department, all students can enjoy the wider College’s outstanding facilities, including the modern Learning & Research Centre, quiet study hubs, well-equipped computer areas, multi-function printers, and expert support from the on-site helpdesk team—ensuring the perfect environment for both practical learning and academic success.

Additional costs

Students will be required to wear the College scrubs/uniform, details of which will be provided at the first lesson. Shoes must flat and fully support the foot. Long hair must be tied up so that it is fully off the face and neck (ideally in a bun). Nails must be short and product free. Jewellery must not be worn for practical activities this includes piercings.

This course requires additional study from home, you will need access to a PC/laptop and suitable Wi-Fi to access teaching and learning. Where applicable, some lessons may be delivered remotely.
