Entry requirements
This course is intended for practicing electricians.
Learners must hold one of the following:
• City & Guilds Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Installing Electrotechnical Systems and Equipment (Buildings, Structures and the Environment)
• City & Guilds Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Electrotechnical Services (Electrical Maintenance)
• City & Guilds Level 3 Electrotechnical qualification
• City & Guilds Level 3 NVQ in Electrotechnical Services Experienced Worker
• City & Guilds Level 3 Electrotechnical Experienced Worker Qualification
• City & Guilds Level 3 Electrotechnical in Dwellings Experienced Worker Qualification
• Other Awarding Organisations equivalences will also be acceptable
or
• ECS Gold Card issued by the JIB or SJIB – Installation Electrician, Maintenance Electrician, or Domestic Electrician.
Course units
System Design & Planning: Master the principles of designing efficient, compliant solar PV systems tailored to domestic and small commercial needs.
Installation Techniques: Get hands-on with mounting, wiring, and commissioning PV systems to meet MCS and IET standards.
Maintenance & Troubleshooting: Learn how to inspect, test, and maintain systems for peak performance and safety.
Regulations & Safety: Understand the latest UK regulations, including BS 7671, and the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS).
Environmental & Economic Impact: Explore how solar PV contributes to sustainability and how to advise clients on cost-saving benefits.

Completion of this course can help students to progress on to other Construction courses available at York College & University Centre.
