York College celebrates treble haul at 2024 North Yorkshire Apprenticeship Awards night

York College & University Centre celebrated a terrific treble at the 2024 North Yorkshire Apprenticeship Awards night.

The prestigious event, staged at the Radisson Hotel in York, got off to a great start for College when our Level 2 Hospitality Team Member apprentice Abbie Newsam was presented with the Intermediate Apprentice of the Year award.

Next, Harrison Blackham was named Construction Apprentice of the Year and, finally, College won the Training Provider of the Year accolade in another keenly-contested category that included York St John University, Springfield Training and the Heart of Yorkshire Education Group’s Apprenticeships Team.

Abbie’s award crowned an excellent final year at College in which she also won a place on Concord Hotels’ Management Development Programme.

For Architectural Joinery apprentice Harrison Blackham, meanwhile, his latest prize completed a personal hat-trick haul of awards, having also been named the British Woodwork Federation’s Apprentice of the Year and clinched the Institute of Carpenters’ Third Year Award.

York College & University Centre Principal and Chief Executive Ken Merry was among the members of College staff present to accept the Training Provider of the Year gong and he declared: “I am delighted that York College & University Centre has been recognised as the best training provider in York and North Yorkshire.

“This is a real testament to the hard work, dedication, and commitment shown by our staff and apprentices to ensuring that life-changing opportunities are developed through a really high-quality apprenticeship offer. We work with some fantastic employers who are key to our success.

“Our apprenticeship offer is continually growing and developing and I cannot wait to see what comes next. To also have two apprentices win individual awards in the same ceremony was fantastic. They really are the future of their industries and it is wonderful that they have completed their training with York College.”
