York College achieves Living Wage accreditation to set benchmark for fair pay in education

York College is proud to announce that it has been officially awarded Living Wage accreditation, a significant milestone that underscores the institution’s commitment to fairness, equality and social responsibility.

This accreditation, issued by the Living Wage Foundation, ensures that all staff receive a wage that reflects the true cost of living, reinforcing the college’s dedication to valuing its workforce.

The Living Wage accreditation is more than a symbol - it is a pledge to create a workplace where every employee is treated with dignity and respect.

By adopting the Living Wage standard, York College demonstrates leadership within the education sector, setting an example for other institutions to follow.

This achievement aligns with the college’s broader mission to foster an inclusive and supportive environment for both staff and students.

For staff, the accreditation guarantees that all employees are paid fairly, helping to reduce financial stress and improve overall wellbeing.

It reflects the college’s commitment to create a positive and supportive working environment where staff feel valued and secure.

In turn, a motivated and fairly treated workforce directly benefits students by fostering a culture of care and excellence.

When staff feel respected and supported, they are better equipped to deliver high-quality teaching and guidance, enhancing the student experience.

On the accreditation award, York College Principal and Chief Executive Ken Merry said: “York College is proud to achieve Living Wage accreditation, reaffirming our commitment to fairness and equality in the workplace. This milestone reflects our dedication to valuing every member of our team and ensuring that wages meet the real cost of living.

“As an institution shaping future generations, we believe this accreditation sets a powerful example for the education sector and strengthens our role as a responsible employer.”

York College remains committed to continuous improvement and social responsibility, ensuring that its practices reflect the values of fairness and sustainability.

This accreditation is a testament to the college’s ongoing efforts to support its staff and contribute positively to the wider community.

The presentation to Ken was made by the Living Wage Foundation's Head of Membership and Regional Development Jessica Brayne, who is also studying a Pottery evening class at York College.
