Starting your studies with us this September?
This mini blog will be a useful information guide for any questions you might have before joining college.
If any queries you have, have not been answered on this guide, please visit the York College future student hub for additional resources.
Room numbers are written in the form: GF(room number), 1F(room number), 2F(room number), 3F(room number), 4F(room number), or CC(room number) for the construction centre.
The ‘F’ stands for ‘floor’ and the number dictates which floor the room is on. For example, 2F means that the room is on the 2nd floor.
‘CC’ stands for ‘Construction Centre,’ which means that your classroom is in that building.
Staff members are there to guide you, so if you’re unsure of where you’re going, just ask for help.
There are side stairs which take you to every floor located in the olive and blue corridors. These are handy for people to use because it reduces the amount of people on the main stairs, which makes getting to your classroom much quicker and easier.
If you forget your lanyard, you will have to collect a temporary sticker from behind reception.

There are two sets of toilets for both genders on every floor – one in the olive corridor and one in the blue corridor.
There are also disabled toilets next to these.

There is a shop on the ground floor, on the left as you walk through the front doors of the building (just past the reception desk).
There is also the ‘1827 Café’ in the atrium (ground floor), and on the second floor, which is located next to the shop. They offer hot, cold and dietary requirement food – something for everybody. You can also purchase hot and cold drinks from here.
There are 2 lunchtime slots for students – the early lunch is 11:30-12:45, and the late lunch is 12:45-13:00. You can relax in any communal areas, but vaping and smoking is ONLY allowed in the designated smoking area at the front of the college (on the grass verge). You can see which lunchtime you have each day through the York College app, along with your lesson times.
Support can first and foremost be found from your Progress Coach, who is there to guide and help you throughout your time at college. You can also go to your course tutors or our Well-being and Safeguarding teams, who are located behind the reception desk and on the right.
For Wi-Fi access, connect to the 'Eduroam' network on your device using the same login details as your college IT account. You will have to activate your college account first, by resetting your password.
York College has their own car park with two floors. You can get a permit if you have had a driving licence for at least a year, or if you have a valid reason for urgently needing one. You can apply for a permit via the York College website.
If you use the bus to get to college, you should buy bus tickets via the college website. Each bus has a different route number which go to different locations. You should find out which route you require before purchasing bus tickets. The tickets will only work for the route number that you buy them for.

If you enjoy quieter areas to spend your break time, then there are many places around college you can go. There is a library on the second floor with a lounge where you can sit quietly and enjoy your book. There are also computer areas, study areas and chairs situated around college where you can enjoy alone time.
Additionally, if you walk behind the reception desk, there is a quiet study area on the right where you can revise in peace.
