Meet your Student Union representatives
We’re so excited to introduce this year’s York College Student Union. The Student Union is all about student voice, inclusion and positive change, and this year’s team of passionate representatives are ready to make a real difference.
Whether it’s introducing new events like culture days and talent shows, promoting mental health awareness, celebrating diversity, overseeing wellbeing initiatives or creating a more sustainable campus, this year’s reps are focused on making York College the best it can be.
Student President Aiyesha Sanni and Vice President Ziemowit Hibner are leading the group, and they are determined to make College life more engaging, supportive and inclusive.
What makes this team special is that each representative brings their own vision and energy to the table.
So, without any more delay, let’s meet them…
“I want to help have more control over what happens in the Student Union as well as to support the other reps. I’d like there to be more events in College.
I’d really like to see a culture day, a sports day and a talent show. A talent show would be really fun.”
“I wanted to be part of the Student Union because I want to have an impact on the College.
“My primary goal is to make sure everyone feels safe and included in the sense that if anyone needs support or to talk to someone, even in terms of having someone to speak to in your own age range, that is available.
“I’m very passionate about learning so I want to encourage others. If anyone has any struggles in lessons, I’d like to support them. That’s my biggest aim.”
“I wanted to give my perspective on how the College can approach diversity and inclusion. I want to help ensure the College continues to be a safe place.
“I want College to be a place where all cultures are celebrated and everybody feels at one.”
“I would like to stand up for and represent the views of the students at York College. I think it’s a great institution and I think diversity is great for a College.
“I’d like to meet new people who have similar interests in the Student Union. I’d like to make new friends and make York College the best place it can be.”
“I’ve always wanted to make a difference by working with people who are faced with issues to do with their gender. I’d also like to help with suicide prevention and mental health awareness. I would love to make a difference, whether it’s helping a couple of people in College or on a wide-scale level.
“I’d love to be able to talk to more people. I’d like to hear their opinions because I won’t have faced everything, for example men’s mental health. I’d like to make a change in the world.”
“I wanted to join the Student Union because I wanted to help make a difference. I want to help change things because I feel like there could be ways that we could do things better from listening to what students say.
“I want to make as many people happy as possible. I want to produce as much happiness in students as I can.”
“I wanted to be part of the Student Union because I want to be able to help and influence. It’s also good experience to share on my CV and life in general. I wanted something to focus on and this is for a good cause.
“I’d like to learn sign language so I can communicate with deaf people. I want everyone to have someone to talk to.”
“I wanted to be part of the Student Union because I wanted to have a wider understanding on things like mental health. I feel like mental health is a big part of life, especially with our students in the College. I think it’s really important that we think about what they feel and how College is.
“I want to achieve good wellbeing in College. I want students to feel safe and also to have more places in College where they can go with their friends.”
“I want to help people who are in need and give them a voice to be heard if they are low on confidence or struggling.
“I am here to listen to and speak up for them.”
“I decided to take part because I could try to change the way our College is doing in terms of sustainability. I’d like us to try and improve.
“I would like to make this College more sustainable. With little steps, I think we can make the world into a better place.
“I’m thinking of helping some charities in our community and to cut down on waste, in particular plastic waste that comes from food and beverage consumption.”
“I’m interested in politics and debates and I want to do Law at university so I thought this opportunity would be great for my CV.
“I’d like to see a prom and fun activities for charity. For the prom, I’d like to look at hotels in York where we could have a disco and some food, but while keeping costs low.”
“I want to bridge the gap between students and the union and make sure their voices are heard.
“I want to gain a lot of feedback and really promote it so that people are aware. One of my objectives is to get more chairs around College so that there are more areas to socialise and to build community.”
