Art student Rue wins competition to model sculpture in this summer's Watchers of York Trail
Are you looking for a great family-fun activity during the summer holidays?
Then, look no further than the Watchers of York trail, which features the wonderful work of our final-year Art & Design student Rue Robinson.
Having won a competition to design one of the trail’s 10 “Watchers”, who are inspired by those that adorn York Minster’s exterior walls, Rue’s 4ft tall fibreglass sculpture – The Garden Guardian - can now be viewed outside the historic Merchant Adventurers’ Hall in Piccadilly.
Rue painted her winning design onto the Watcher in our College workshops with its abstract plant shapes inspired by Swedish artist Hilma af Klint.
The free trail has been organised by Make It York in collaboration with the Minster and the 10 sculptures are now positioned in locations across the city centre until August 31, with maps available from the Visit York Visitor Information Centre in Parliament Street.
Rue is no stranger to seeing her work on public display, having been commissioned at the age of 13 to complete a two-month mural restoration at a flint mill.
She is now planning to study Costume with Textiles at the University of Huddersfield and hopes to one day work in costume design on a film set or as an independent artist.
