Sound Recording for Beginners
In this course, you'll dive into the process of micing up various instruments, including guitars, drums, and vocals, to capture the best sound possible.
You'll learn the techniques for recording live music and sounds, ensuring optimal mic placement and signal levels.
The class will also guide you through using Cubase alongside a soundboard, showing you how to route signals, mix tracks and manage audio levels in real time.
By the end of the course, you'll be able to set up a professional recording session, mic instruments properly and effectively record and mix live performances using Cubase.

There are no formal entry requirements for this course, although enthusiasm, passion and commitment are essential.

You'll receive tutor feedback throughout the course and will receive a York College Certificate upon completion.

Course progression
As the course progresses, you'll gain the confidence to work comfortably in a studio setting, mastering the techniques of recording live music and sounds.
You'll develop a strong understanding of session setup, microphone placement, and signal routing.
By the end, you'll be fully equipped to successfully record, mix and produce high-quality tracks, preparing you for real-world studio environments.
You could then progress to another York College course.

10th September 2025 - 19th November 2025.
Wednesdays, 5.30pm-7.30pm.
Study methods
Onsite, face-to-face delivery. Students will learn in a friendly and professional recording studio environment with all appropriate health and safety provision.
Lessons will start with an introduction/familiarity to the studio followed by an agenda for the lesson.
Each session will continue with micing up a variety of instruments and connecting it to Cubase.
The lesson will be wrapped up with a recap of what was taught and what the plan is the for next lesson.
Facilities
You will be taught in a recording studio with all materials provided. As well as our state of the art digital and analogue hybrid recording studio and capture room, students have access to a fantastic range of College-wide facilities such as the Learning & Research Centre, study hubs, computer areas with accompanying multi-function printers and helpdesk advice.
