Students raise more than £730 during St Leonard's Hospice Accumulator Challenge
A York-to-London cycling challenge, second-hand swap shop, two film screenings and FIFA (EA Sports FC) and Mario Kart gaming tournaments were all part of the fundraising activities that saw three groups of York College students raise a combined total of more than £730 for St Leonard’s Hospice.
The A Level Business and T Level Leadership & Management learners showcased their entrepreneurial skills to devise and stage the events for the benefit of their local community as part of St Leonard’s 2026 Accumulator Challenge.
Other activities planned and carried out by the students included a football competition and an Easter hamper prize draw.
Each group received a £30 repayable seed fund by the charity to help start their challenges.
Beforehand, the students were also given an introduction to the hospice and its work and offered invaluable advice about fundraising and enhancing their ideas during a Campus visit by Annie and Sarah, from St Leonard’s.
Tackling the distance of 240 miles from College to London on a static bike, the students met their two-day target, having reached as far as Grantham overnight.
Fellow learners from across the building, meanwhile, were invited to an afternoon at the movies with blockbusters Pirates of the Caribbean and Jurassic Park being shown on the big screen in our Lecture Theatre.
Admission was free to avoid infringing copyright issues and legal restrictions, but the audience were invited to pay for popcorn and soft drinks.
Fans also gathered in numbers to watch the FIFA tournament, which looked spectacular on the Lecture Theatre’s big screen.
The second-hand swap shop, meanwhile, saw students and staff donate unwanted items to receive a 25 per cent discount on any of the contributed goods they might want to buy themselves.
Our students' contribution, along with the efforts of other organisations and businesses from across the region, helped raise a record combined total for the challenge of £27,654.34 across a one-month period from February to March.
That means a terrific total of almost £214,000 has now been raised over the 10-year period since the Accumulator Challenge was first introduced.
A big well done to everyone involved!
