Netball trials offer chance to gain a quality education and coaching from the sport's top UK teacher
Are you a Year 11 student looking for an opportunity to combine high-quality, post-16 education with the chance to play a strongly competitive standard of netball?
Yes? Then, please come along to York College’s 2026/27 Netball Development Centre trials on Wednesday 25th February from 4pm-5.30pm in our Sports Hall.
Our netball team competes in Yorkshire Humber T2 League A, having been promoted in 2025 after finishing joint-top of the division below.
It means our players now test their talents against some of the region’s leading netball colleges and schools, such as Greenhead, Wyke and Queen Ethelburga’s.
Our Development Centre side also benefits from being coached by England Netball’s 2025 Teacher of the Year award winner Janine Gibbons.
Throughout term time, the team play games on a Wednesday and train twice a week on Monday mornings and Tuesday lunchtimes, with their sporting commitments fitting around the requirements of the courses they are studying, whether that be A Levels, T Levels or a vocational qualification.
Janine, who also coaches at York RI Netball Club, has been running College’s Development Centre since 2018 and, on next year’s player recruitment plans, she said: “We’re looking for experienced players who are, ideally, playing at club level, but we would also consider anybody performing well in school teams.
“We don’t want girls dropping out of the game at 16 and I feel it’s important that they keep playing. At the Development Centre, we are now playing against other colleges and schools with a strong reputation in netball and it is a very good standard.”

For anybody unable to make 25th February, further trials are pencilled in to take place in the summer.
