Taster Day bookings are now closed

Bookings for the Year 11 Taster Days on 11th and 13th January are now closed. If you have submitted a booking we will send an email confirming your place and further information about the event before 17th December. Please check your junk folder in case it is directed there. You’ll also find information about the day and what to expect on our drop-down menus below.

If you do not receive an email by 17th December, or you have any other queries, please contact the Schools Liaison Team on or 01904 770239.

If you were unable to book a place on the Taster Days and would like more information about our courses, you’ll find all the course information in the Study section of the website. There’s also lots of information in the School Leavers section to explain the types of courses we offer and advice on how to choose.

Our next Open Event is on Tuesday 15th February 2022 and before then you can access our ON-DEMAND content to watch talks and videos all in one place.

What happens on the Taster Day?

You will register at College between 8.45 and 9.00am and then attend a Welcome Session to introduce you to College staff and provide information about the day.

Your timetable for the day will be sent to you before the event and for the rest of the day you’ll follow this and go to the subject areas where your taster sessions will take place. Don’t worry – there will be lots of people around to help direct you to where you need to go.

During the lunch break you can grab some food from our catering outlets (you’ll find information about what’s available here) or you can bring your own food to eat in our social areas. There’ll also be the chance to find out about other subjects and activities (like our Xtra Curricular offering) that run at College too.

Our taster sessions will be finished by 3.00pm which is when you’ll depart College. Don’t worry though if you’re using a College coach to travel home - although these won’t depart until the usual times between 4.40pm and 4.50pm - you’ll be able to wait in the College social areas until then.

Some students may have a slightly shorter day, particularly if only trying one Vocational subject. If this is the case you’ll be able to see this on your timetable when you receive it. You may be required to arrive later at College (if you only have an afternoon session) or you may finish earlier if you only have sessions in the morning.

Do I need to wear school uniform?

No, but please try to dress appropriately as some subjects will be practical.

Please note the requirements below if you are doing any of the following sessions:

Hairdressing, Beauty Therapy, Hair & Media Make-up – ideally don’t wear any expensive jewellery.

Fitness Instructing, Sport Coaching, Sport & Exercise Science - you should wear or bring appropriate clothing (no jeans) and footwear for participating in a practical session.

Performing & Production Arts Level 2 & Acting Level 3, Musical Theatre, Dance - please make sure you bring or wear loose clothing and suitable footwear (including socks) for indoor exercise.

Uniformed Services - you should wear or bring appropriate clothing (no jeans) and footwear for participating in a practical session.

Do I need to bring anything?

Please bring a pen and some paper to make notes.

You will need some money to buy lunch, or a snack or drink if you wish to do so.

Using the College Coaches on Taster Day

You are able to use the York College coach services for your journey to and from College for free if these are applicable for where you live. We have 15 coach services organised by the College which pick up from outside of York and also the outer York area.

If you would like to use one of the College coach services on the Taster Day, please indicate this when you apply confirming the route number you would like to travel on, as well as the stop you intend to travel from.

For details of other bus companies that stop at or close to York College, you can use the link to the Journey Planner to find routes and pick-up times, which you’ll find on our travel & transport page too. Please note that tickets for public transport routes are not free for students using them to attend the Taster Days.
