VTCT Level 4 Diploma in Advanced Beauty Therapy Aesthetics (Top-up)
The VTCT Level 4 Diploma in Advanced Beauty Therapy Aesthetics (Top-up) is a vocationally related qualification that is focused on advanced beauty practices for reducing hair growth using intense light and laser treatments, and skin rejuvenation using intense light and microdermabrasion. You will also develop an understanding of product chemistry, the physiology of ageing and the principles of dermatology and microbiology.
Entry requirements
Students must have completed the Level 4 Salon Management and Level 3 Facial Electrical qualifications.
Course units
Students will be required to complete the units below to gain the qualification.
Mandatory units:
- Chemistry of Hair and Beauty Products
- Physiology of Ageing
- Dermatology and Microbiology
- Apply Micro Dermabrasion
- Laser and Light Treatments for Hair Removal
- Laser and Light Treatments for Skin Rejuvenation
Assessment
You will be required to present a portfolio of evidence. Your tutor/assessor will provide guidance on how to prepare the portfolio of evidence and how to show practical achievement and understanding of the knowledge required to successfully complete this qualification.
Evidence in the portfolio may take the following forms:
- Observed work
- Witness statements
- Audio-visual media
- Evidence of prior learning or attainment
- Written questions
- Oral questions
- Assignments
- Case studies
All evidence should be documented in the portfolio and cross referenced to unit outcomes. Constructing the portfolio of evidence should not be left to the end of the course.

Course progression
The VTCT Level 4 Diploma in Advanced Beauty Therapy includes units within the Salon Management qualification, recognised by industry as the qualification needed for those who wish to become employed as a Salon Manager in the hair or beauty sector. Students who study this qualification will also develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours to work as an advanced Beauty Therapist specialising in a range of advanced treatments and services. This qualification also provides a sound platform for further learning or training.

The course will run over one day/evening for 32 weeks.
Study methods
This is a Level 4 qualification and students will need to demonstrate research skills, academic writing and independent learning. Initial input and guidance will be provided by the tutor, both in the College environment and online.
Facilities
York College have 2 large fully equipped hairdressing salons, an inviting commercial salon reception, 3 media make-up workshops and 2 beauty therapy salons. Adult learners will have access to professional products and equipment (including Loreal and Eve Taylor).
Students have access to a fantastic range of College-wide facilities such as the Learning Resource Centre (LRC), study hubs, computer areas with accompanying multi-function printers and helpdesk advice.
Additional costs
Students are generally required to purchase a kit (approximately £200); however, we are currently reviewing this situation. All students will be required to wear a uniform. The full details of this will be provided at a later date.
This course requires additional study from home, you will need access to a PC/laptop and suitable Wi-Fi to access teaching and learning. Where applicable, some lessons may be delivered remotely.
