Theatrical, Special Effects & Hair & Media Make-up Certificate/Diploma Level 3

This Level 3 diploma is designed for aspiring hair and make-up artists who have already learnt the basic techniques at Level 2. Develop advanced techniques in creating captivating looks for stage, screen, and photoshoots.
Throughout the course, you’ll gain hands-on experience using pre-made prosthetics, special effects make-up, body painting and in hair styling. You’ll also learn industry-standard practices, including how to collaborate with production teams and meet the demands of creative briefs. With access to professional tools and guidance from experienced tutors, you’ll build a diverse portfolio that showcases your talent and prepares you for employment or progress into higher education (Foundation Degree in Media Make-up).
Entry requirements
You must have completed Hairdressing VRQ Level 2 and/or Level 2 Hair & Media Make-up and be confident working at this level. You should also have GCSE English and/or Maths at grade 4 or higher.

Additional costs
All students are required to purchase a practical kit and uniform, details of which will be provided during your advice and guidance discussion and induction.
Method of delivery
This course is predominantly a practical-based course. This means that the majority of your training will be delivered in one of the College salons or workshops. You’ll be expected to complete theoretical knowledge through homework activities and directed learning, although some theory work will also be embedded into practical sessions. Tests and assignments will also be used to check and test your knowledge and understanding.
A variety of enrichment activities will be scheduled throughout the year to extend skills and knowledge. You will also take part in competition work to showcase advanced techniques.
How will I be assessed?
Assessment consists of practical observations, demonstrating professional skills and effective client care and communication. You may often be required to find some of your own models for assessment, particularly for your make-up design projects.
Oral and written questioning, assignments, projects and tests online are used to test knowledge and understanding.
You will need to produce a portfolio showing examples of your work.
Good course combinations
This is a full-time course. It is not possible to combine this course with other Vocational, T Level, Apprenticeship or A Level programmes.
Your next steps
Progression on to Level 4 or 5 (Foundation degree) or Level 6 (BA (Hons) degree).
Career possibilities include employment in the media make-up and hairdressing industries with opportunities for self-employment. Examples could include working in theatre, TV or film (although more experience at Levels 4, 5 and 6 are beneficial for film and television).
