Hairdressing VRQ Certificate/Diploma Level 2

Entry requirements
A minimum of 3 GCSE subjects at grade 3 and Maths or English at grade 4 or above, or have a Level 1 qualification in Hairdressing or Beauty Therapy/Media Make-up.
What will I study?
Units you will study includes:
- Working in the hairdressing industry
- Following health and safety practices in the salon
- Client consultation for hair services
- Shampooing and conditioning the hair and scalp
- Cutting hair
- The art of dressing hair
- Colouring and lightening hair
- Perming and neutralising hair
- Promoting products and services to clients in the salon
- Salon reception duties
- Creating an image on a theme within the hair and beauty sector
You will study GCSE English or Maths (if you haven't achieved GCSE grade 4).
Additional costs
All students are required to purchase a practical kit and uniform, details of which will be provided during your advice and guidance discussion and induction.
Method of delivery
This course is predominantly a practical-based course. This means that the majority of your training will be delivered in one of the College salons or workshops. You’ll be expected to complete theoretical knowledge through homework activities and directed learning, although some theory work will also be embedded into practical sessions. Tests and assignments will also be used to check and test your knowledge and understanding.
A variety of enrichment activities will be scheduled throughout the year to help you prepare for progression and employment. You will also take part in competition work to demonstrate working under pressure and striving for high standards.
How will I be assessed?
Assessment consists of practical observations on paying clients, demonstrating professional skills and effective client care and communication. Students are often required to find some of their own models for assessment.
Oral and written questioning, assignments, projects and tests online are used to test knowledge and understanding.
Assessment will be graded Pass, Merit or Distinction.
Good course combinations
This is a full-time course. It is not possible to combine this course with other Vocational, T Level, Apprenticeship or A Level programmes.
Your next steps
You could progress straight into salon employment, continue your education and training by completing the Advanced Hairdressing Diploma VRQ Level 3 for one year, or you could follow an apprenticeship route and study the Advanced & Creative Hair Professional Apprenticeship Level 3.
