Advanced Hairdressing VRQ Level 3
Expand your hairdressing skills on this Level 3 Advanced Hairdressing course. This one year course offers the opportunity to learn more specialist treatments and services, mirroring current fashion trends and industry requirements. This course also enables you to develop your supervisory skills in a wide range of hairdressing related activities. Designed for those with existing hairdressing experience, this advanced qualification will refine your technical abilities and enhance your creativity, preparing you for senior stylist roles or even running your own salon.

Entry requirements
You must have completed Hairdressing VRQ Level 2 and be confident working at this level. You should also have GCSE English and/or Maths at grade 4 or higher.
What will I study?
Units you will study include:
- Monitor and maintain health and safety practice in the salon
- Consultation support for colleagues on hair services
- Cut hair to create a variety of looks
- Style and dress hair using a variety of techniques
- Colour hair to create a variety of looks
- Bridal hairdressing techniques
- Cut men’s hair
- Hair colour correction
You will study GCSE English or Maths (if you haven't achieved GCSE grade 4).
Additional costs
All students are required to purchase a practical kit and uniform, details of which will be provided during your advice and guidance discussion and induction.
Method of delivery
This course is predominantly a practical-based course. This means that the majority of your training will be delivered in one of the College salons or workshops. You’ll be expected to complete theoretical knowledge through homework activities and directed learning, although some theory work will also be embedded into practical sessions. Tests and assignments will also be used to check and test your knowledge and understanding.
A variety of enrichment activities will be scheduled throughout the year to extend skills and knowledge. You will also take part in competition work to showcase advanced techniques.
How will I be assessed?
Assessment consists of practical observations on paying clients, demonstrating advanced skills and knowledge. You will be required to promote services and find some of your own models for assessment.
Oral and written questioning, assignments, projects and tests online are used to test knowledge and understanding.
Assessment will be graded Pass, Merit or Distinction.
Good course combinations
This is a full-time course. It is not possible to combine this course with other Vocational, T Level, Apprenticeship or A Level programmes.
Your next steps
Progression opportunities could include specialist hairstyling at a broad range of locations. Other possible roles include educators for manufacturers, assessors, lecturers, demonstrators, and advanced hair colourists/fashion stylists. You could progress on to higher education such as the Foundation Degree in Media Make-up, Special Effects & Hair Design (offered at York College). If you want to progress to higher education you must have GCSE at grade 4 or above in English and Maths.
