Functional Skills English (from Entry Level to Level 2)
This course aims to help people who would like a Functional Skills qualification in English or who would like to do a GCSE but haven’t been in education for some time. We can help you develop your English skills prior to a GCSE course.
Improving knowledge of English will help students get jobs, gain promotion and generally improve their skills in the workplace.
We encourage students to reach their potential as quickly as possible. There are dedicated Level 2 Functional Skills English classes that offer focused work and can lead to progression to fast-track GCSE English in January.
You do not need formal qualifications but you would be expected to have an assessment interview to place you on the correct level course.
If you have previously gained a Functional Skills English qualification, you can enrol to the next level.
You will have the opportunity to improve:
Writing: spelling, grammar, punctuation and types of text
Reading: skimming, scanning and for detail
Speaking, listening and communication: discussions, presentations, following instructions
There are two written exams (one reading, one writing) and a speaking and listening assessment. Functional Skills exams can be taken at regular times throughout the course, when you are ready.
For most people the course will be free as they are funded by the government. However, if you already have a GCSE grade 4/C or above in this subject, are studying for a higher education qualification, or haven’t lived in the UK or EU for the past three years, there may be a fee.
Successful completion of these courses will generate a deeper understanding of functional English, developing communication skills, written work and analytical reading skills.
