This course is for anyone looking to develop their filmmaking skills and gain experience working as a professional filmmaker and freelance content creator.

The BA (Hons) Film Production and Industry Practice* degree is part of the York School of Art and is a highly industry-focused study of film production, supporting you to work with live clients throughout your study as well as developing your portfolio, personal brand, and professional reputation. You will explore specialist technical skills and creative practice with the aim of developing your ability and confidence with filmmaking to become a skilled independent filmmaker with the ability to work within a freelance capacity or as part of a larger crew in a professional context.

The entry requirements for this course are 72 UCAS tariff points, a Level 3 qualification in a relevant subject or A Levels. Significant relevant prior learning and experience will also be considered. You might be asked to submit a portfolio of work to support your application.

On receipt of your application, you will be asked to provide a portfolio that demonstrates your ideas and abilities creatively. This may showcase work you have done at school or college, or alternatively this may capture independently devised projects. You will then be invited for interview in which you are able to discuss the course and ask any questions you may have.

Assessments are measured against learning outcomes and while these must be achieved, we offer flexibility in relation to how learners complete these objectives; we celebrate diverse and innovative approaches to evidencing learning. Practical units will often be evidenced through exported final cuts with preparatory documentation and personal reflections. Theory-based assessments are traditionally evidenced through extended writing projects.

Students will develop skills in practical filmmaking in variety of job roles whilst refining their competency with time management, critical and creative thinking, scheduling, collaborative practice, working to a brief, planning and reflection.

The BA in Film Production and Professional Practice is a face-to-face highly practical course with delivery taught through workshops, individual and group tasks, screenings, seminars and masterclasses.

There may be occasional additional costs related to traveling to film shoots and for students to experience events, industry workshops, masterclasses and other opportunities. Crew uniforms may be purchased for film shoots, but these will be discussed upon successful enrolment.

The study of a variety of specialist practices and opportunities for industry experience will allow you to discover your strengths and tailor them to suit your future career goals. Independent filmmaking and freelance content creation will enable you to take charge of your own career and hire out your services to clients with full autonomy. There is a wealth of job roles within the professional film industry, including Directors, Producers, Screenwriters, Editors, Special Effects Producers and many more specialised career paths. This course could open doors to becoming a Camera Operator, Film/Video Editor, Location Manager, Runner, Sound/Lighting Technician, Programme Researcher, Production Coordinator, Freelance Digital Production or to work in marketing.
Recent alumni from the degree have gone on to a wide range of exciting careers and further study. One graduate has worked with major artists including members of One Direction, Robbie Williams and Lewis Capaldi.

Other former students have progressed into roles such as social media officers and independent filmmakers, while some have continued their education through postgraduate study in film. Our current students are also gaining valuable industry experience alongside their studies, with students having worked on productions including Emmerdale and professional films.

Course leaders and tutors:

Josh Roberts

Josh Roberts has worked at York College & University Centre since 2007 and has taught across the Media and Film provisions at every level before becoming the programme lead for the BA Film Production & Professional Practice.

Josh graduated Lincoln University with a degree in Media Production with a specialism in live broadcast. After graduating Josh worked on a variety of short film projects before winning Best Overall Film, Best Direction and Audience Choice awards in the London heat of the 2012 48 Hour Film Challenge. The film was then chosen to represent the UK in Los Angeles, screening in Grauman's Chinese Theatre. 

In addition to teaching Josh produces corporate videography for local businesses and has achieved a Master’s degree in Media Production at York St John, with a focus on the representation of masculinity in modern media. 

Neil Smith

Neil K. Smith brings over 27 years of experience in the film and television industry, blending practical expertise with academic insight. Having worked with renowned organizations such as the British Film Institute (BFI), the RANK Organisation, and the BBC, Neil's career spans multiple facets of the industry, from production to post-production.

As Managing Partner at FilmYork.org, Neil plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of film education and production, guiding emerging filmmakers while offering hands-on industry expertise. His extensive career as an educator has seen him lecture at various institutions, inspiring students with a wealth of knowledge and real-world experience.

A seasoned editor, Neil has honed his craft over decades of working on a variety of projects, contributing to both corporate productions and independent films. His deep understanding of the film process, combined with a passion for storytelling and technical precision, makes him a well-respected figure in the educational sector.

Scott Langford

With over 20 years of teaching experience in creative media, film, photography, and design, Scott Langford brings a wealth of industry knowledge and teaching expertise to the Film Production degree course.  Scott uses his role to develop the next generation of filmmakers and media professionals with his background in video production, post-production, animation, 2D visual and graphic design, audio production, and photography. Scott has worked as a freelance creative in the media sector, undertaking graphic design and video production projects. This hands-on industry experience ensures that students benefit from real-world insights, practical knowledge, and professional guidance tailored to the evolving media landscape.

Scott is passionate about storytelling and visual communication and is committed to equipping students with the creative and technical skills needed to thrive in the film and media industry.

Declan Carlin

After graduating with a BA (Hons) video production degree, Declan Carlin spent his career working as a freelance camera operator on productions for British Swimming, Everest Windows and Vodafone as well as editing for Diagonal View, a subsidiary of Sky. He brought his technical knowledge and industry experience over to York College in 2023 and has progressed into teaching both Creative Media and BA (Hons) Film Production.

Brittany Clarke

Brittany has a background in social media marketing and started teaching media courses in further education in 2018. She is currently the A Level Media Studies programme leader at York College. Brittany studied Film and Television Production BA (Hons) at York St John University and holds a Master’s degree in Writing for Performance and Publication from the University of Leeds. Currently, Brittany is working on her PhD at York St John University, focusing on representations of feminine monstrosity in The Witcher Netflix series.
