Edinburgh Project 1

York School of Art students provide 'paws for thought' with stunning mural at university pet charity

A charity that supports homeless people with animals in Edinburgh now has a stunning mural in its clinic thanks to the creative talents of York College University Centre’s BA (Hons) Graphic & Communication Design students.

Second-year degree students Lisa Foster, Melissa Adams and Michelle Smith were joined in Scotland by course lead Monica Gabb and tutor Katy Holmes during the three-day project for All4Paws – a student-led outreach initiative at the University of Edinburgh's Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies.

The opportunity arose via Royal (Dick) alumnus Lisa and was incorporated into the York School of Art course’s Narrative Storytelling module.

An initial visit to the clinic had seen the undergraduates conduct research and gather ideas for the project by liaising with staff.

Their plans were later shared with All4Paws during a presentation carried out remotely on Microsoft Teams.

Having arrived in Edinburgh, each student then designed three images depicting the charity’s core vales of Animal Welfare, Trust and Empathy, which were all brought together in an eye-catching gallery wall display.

Commenting on the success of the project, course lead Monica Gabb said: “The students worked together to decide upon a collaborative colour pallet and planned their imagery to scale in the run up to installation. They then worked so well and were organised and professional throughout an intensive three days of plotting and finalising the mural.”

Expressing his gratitude for the students’ work, Andrew Gardiner - a Senior Veterinary Clinical Lecturer at the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies and founder of All4Paws - said: “Huge thanks for making our mural possible.

“It will make a real difference to the feel of the clinic and change the way people relate to the space for the better. We are so lucky to have had you do this – with all the effort, goodwill and ideas you have shown to reach out, capture and express what you have managed to do here.”
