Applying for your bursary 2026/27

This year we have introduced the PayMyStudent portal to create a more streamline experience for the students when applying for their bursary. To apply for a bursary, students need to register on the portal using their student reference number, date of birth and create a memorable password. They will then need to activate the account using the link sent to their email and log in using the same details and password they have just created. To access the portal and apply now, click here.

Bursary support elements

The most common support elements are:

-Travel funding to/from college and compulsory placements

-Free meal credit: If you meet government set criteria.

-Essential kit/equipment costs: This includes PPE and uniform.

-University open day visits (final year students only): Maximum of 3 visits or total spend of £150, whichever comes first. This increases to £250 for performing arts students due to audition costs. We can also cover the cost of your UCAS application fee.

-Childcare: Students can claim childcare funding of up to £180 per child, per week during term-time on the days they are timetabled to be in college.

Bursary funding is assessed for the current academic year only and is not guaranteed. There is a limited budget, so please apply as early as possible, but by 31st July at the very latest to have your support in place ready for the start of term. We cannot guarantee that your support will be in place at the start of term if you apply after this date and we may not be able to provide funding if you apply later in the academic year as budgeting may have been allocated to earlier applicants.

Free College Meals – Universal Credit

If you are in receipt of Universal Credit, even if you don’t meet other criteria, you are entitled to a free college meal.

To receive this support, you will need to upload 3 consecutive months of FULL universal credit statements, and they must be the most recent statements you have received.

Care to Learn – Support for Young Parents

If you’re a young parent under the age of 20 and studying at York College, you may be eligible for help with childcare costs through the Care to Learn scheme.

This government-funded support can help cover the cost of childcare and associated travel while you study. To apply, you will need to register with the York College PayMyStudent portal here. When you apply, you will need to select further education and answer the questions appropriately relating to Childcare. For guidance or support with your application, please visit the Funding Team in the Student Experience hub or email ChildcareFunding@yorkcollege.ac.uk

Higher education bursary applications for 2026/27

Students who are studying a degree level program can apply for the Higher Education bursary. You will need to register with the York College PayMyStudent portal here. You will then select the Higher Education Application option once you start the application process.

Please Note: Applications for the HE bursary are not assessed until October half term.

If eligible, full-time students receive a payment of £800 and part-time students receive a payment of £400. This is made in two instalments, the first in November and the second around Easter.

Student’s attendance will be checked prior to each bursary payment being released. The College reserves the right to withhold or suspend payments to any student whose attendance is deemed to be at an unacceptable level without good reason. This also applies where a lack of engagement or academic misconduct has been identified.

Please see the Higher Education Guidance section below for our Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) and Evidence Guide.

Higher education hardship fund

The Hardship Fund can provide additional support to higher education students who experience unexpected financial difficulty during their course. Funding is limited and applications are assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Students wishing to apply for this fund should speak to the funding team in the first instance. This is so we can fully explain the procedure and what evidence is needed based on the individual circumstances.
