The York College Centre for Sport offers students at York College three different elements to combine College life and sport. Within the Centre for Sports, College students can access the below areas:
- Performance Sports
- Competition Sports
- Enrichment Sports & Fitness.
This area is for talented student-athletes aged between 16 and 19 who want the opportunity to combine outstanding education with high-quality coaching in one of our Performance Sport teams. All of those selected will follow a full-time education programme as well as receiving high-quality coaching in their chosen sport.
Our Performance teams are competing at the highest level nationally within AoC Sport leagues and have an expectation to challenge in both league and cup competitions. These sports teams have a proven track record of success, as well as supporting students to achieve high-level exit routes such as becoming a professional in their sport (including playing, coaching or officiating) and/or attaining sports scholarships to higher education institutes.
Our Performance Sports have outstanding links with local partners who support and enhance our delivery.
- Our Men’s Football 1st team runs in partnership with i2i Football Academy
- Our Men's and Women's Rugby programme is delivered by York City Knights
- Our Women’s Football programme and Men’s Football 2nd team are delivered by UEFA qualified staff who are actively working in Academy football.
This area is for students who want to supplement their educational journey by competing on a regional level with one of our competition teams. Our Competition Sports teams take part in AoC Sport regional level competitions either weekly or monthly. Although these teams will be competing in college sports leagues, the emphasis for these teams is to develop and improve students who will continue this sport at a participation level alongside their next steps into employment or further/higher education.
The teams on offer here are:
- Men's Basketball
- Women's Netball
- Women’s Football 2nd team.
This area is open to all College students offering them a chance to take part in a range of sports and fitness-based enrichment activities. Using both our students and staff we aim to develop a weekly schedule that would help contribute to improving the physical and mental wellness of our staff and students.
This will encompass the fitness element of enrichment and provide access to the gym, using our personal training students to offer a free personal training service along with creating exercise classes and a sports activities timetable.
Every student accepted on to our Performance Sport and Competition Sport teams is required to undertake a full-time programme of educational study. This is organised to fit in with regular training and coaching. Students may study across the full range of courses offered at the College, (excluding apprenticeships) and results demonstrate success in both exams and coursework. Attendance and satisfactory progress on the educational programme is monitored regularly, and all the Centre for Sport members are expected to work equally hard on this aspect as well as their coaching and training. York College wants every player to attain academic success as well as sporting achievement.
Successful involvement in any of the Performance Sport programmes will provide opportunities to progress into: careers in professional/semi-professional sport (this is only for those who show exceptional development), coaching, refereeing, work in sport and recreation, further and higher education, overseas coaching and possible scholarships.
