Entry Requirements
There are no formal entry requirements, however, all candidates need to have a basic understanding of how the human body functions and be experienced in the use of a gym for their own personal fitness. As this is an instructor qualification, a good level of verbal communication is an advantage.

This qualification is aimed at students who wants to pursue a career in the health and fitness industry as a fitness instructor in the context of gym-based exercise.

This qualification covers a wide variety of topics relevant to the role of a gym instructor, comprising of anatomy and physiology (including the structure and function of the major body systems) and how to maintain health, safety and welfare in a variety of fitness environments. How to programme safe and effective exercise for a range of clients, the health benefits of physical activity, the importance of healthy eating, how to communicate with clients effectively and motivate clients to adhere to an exercise programme is also covered.

You will learn the skills and knowledge required to plan and prepare a gym-based exercise programme to both individuals and groups. Our course is delivered face-to-face by highly qualified and experienced fitness tutors in a state-of-the-art facility, providing you with the best possible learning experience in order to develop your confidence and skills in instructing health and fitness. The course meets the latest industry requirements & standards set by CIMSPA which is internationally recognised as a benchmark for training in the industry and will qualify you to work in any gym across the UK.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements, however, all candidates need to have a basic understanding of how the human body functions and be experienced in the use of a gym for their own personal fitness. As this is an instructor qualification, a good level of verbal communication is an advantage

  • Principles of exercise, fitness and health
  • Health, safety and welfare in a fitness environment
  • Know how to support clients that take part in exercise and physical activity
  • Planning gym-based exercise
  • Delivering gym-based exercise

Assessments

A range of compulsory assessment is covered including:

  • 1 x multiple choice theory paper – online exam
  • Practical Summative Assessments
  • Learner Assessment Record

Regular formative assessment is included throughout the course, with home study required.

£405 - £810

Course progression

Following successful completion of the Level 2 Gym Instructing qualification, students will have the opportunity to progress on to a Level 3 Personal Training qualification.

At York College we currently offer a Level 3 Personal Training – Practitioner qualification available to study on an evening.

Dates & course durations

Mondays, 6.00pm-9.00pm

Intake 2: February 5th 2024 - 1st July 2024
(17 weeks of face-to-face contact time)

Study methods

A range of teaching methods will be utilised including a mix of theory-based sessions and practical gym-based sessions in the newly refurbished Athletic Suite. Normally, a theory and a practical session each week.

Practical sessions are held in The Athletic Suite with a range of commercial standard cardiovascular and resistance machines and free weights.

Facilities

The majority of lessons will take place in our newly refurbished gym, The Athletic Suite, where students will have access to industry standard gym equipment, including health screening resources.

Our course is delivered face-to-face by highly qualified and experienced fitness tutors in a state-of-the-art facility, providing you with the best possible learning experience in order to develop your confidence and skills in instructing health and fitness.

Students also have access to a fantastic range of College-wide facilities such as the Learning Resource Centre (LRC), study hubs, computer areas with accompanying multi-function printers and helpdesk advice.

Additional costs

This course requires practical clothing and footwear and resource packs which will need to be purchased by the student, the cost of this can vary depending on individual budgets.

Some courses may require additional study from home, you may need access to a PC/laptop and suitable Wi-Fi to access teaching and learning. You will be made aware of any additional study time at the time of enrolment

Career progression

Students have gone on to employment or self-employment as a fitness instructor (gym-based).
